Quote:
Passengers paying online for checked bags will be charged $23 for the first bag and $32 for the second -- an $8 and $7 increase from current rates, respectively.

Those checking in bags at the airport will shell out even more: $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second.

Continental matches Delta baggage fee increase

Continental Airlines has matched Delta Air Lines' recent checked-luggage fee increase, a Continental spokeswoman says.

Delta and Continental passengers paying online for checked bags will be charged $23 for the first bag and $32 for the second.

Ouch. Hopefully this is just for domestic flights.

And there goes United:
Quote:
(CNN) -- United Airlines is the latest in a string of major airlines to increase checked luggage fees.

Effective Thursday for tickets purchased for travel on or after January 21, passengers will be charged $25 for the first checked bag and $35 for the second at the airport.

American Airlines and US Air jump on the bandwagon:

Quote:
American Airlines has joined its competitors in raising checked luggage fees.

The airline announced Monday it would charge $25 for the first checked bag and $35 for the second. American is the last major legacy carrier to join in a wave of baggage fee increases that Delta Air Lines initiated earlier this month.

The changes are effective for tickets purchased on or after February 1 for travel within the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Flew Delta to SJO in early November and there was no charge for the 1 piece of luggage that I checked. My experience in flying to SJO on Delta, AA and Continental in 2008 was that none of those carriers charged for one piece of checked luggage on international flights.

Unless AA policy has changed since September they allow 2 pieces of checked baggage with no charge. Of course the 50 lb limit and 62 inch limit for each bag are still in play.

Yes, it's only for domestic flights.

Bump for more bad news: AA and USAir increase fees too (see 1st post).

I imagine these increases may affect mongers with checked baggage flying to SJO via a connecting US domestic flight, no?

Unless they have recently changed the rules (since October) if you are flying on a single itinerary that includes an international destination, the whole trip is considered international. So if for example you are going from Chicago thru Miami to SJO, all legs of that are considered international and international baggage fees apply.

However, if you book your trip piecemeal - say one ticket to Miami and a separate ticket to SJO from Miami, then the first leg is domestic and the domestic baggage fees apply to that leg.

From what I read, they merely changed the fees, not the underlying rules.

Thanks for clearing that up. I fly out of Miami so I don't have this situation, but was curious how it worked.

These increases may also only apply to people buying tickets from the effective date forward, not sure. When they first started to charge for baggage anyone who had a bought a ticket prior to the change in policy was not affected. Since it is now a rate hike on an add service it may be treated differently.

US Airways has an ambiguous listing of TransAtlantic flights have 2 free checked bags. I've paid coming down but get free going back...I've never been given a good answer why the difference, but as I was expecting to pay for a bag, I wasn't going to complain.

I flew Mexicana for ridiculously cheap. They allow 1 free bag of 55 lbs, and $40.00 for a second, same weight. I flew OHare Chicago to Mexico City, so going through security took 5 minutes, mostly to decide which empty security checkpoint I wanted to go through. Mexico City airport has more dutyfree shops than all of the duty free shops in all the airports in the US combined. Able to bring in 5 bottles of good stuff for around $100.00. The only inconvenience was having to go from my arrival gate to immigration to be issued a tourist card, then go back to my departure gate which was my arrival gate and give them the card.

Sometimes on Spirit I'll play "checked bag Roulette"--see if I can get the checking free at the gate. Obviously doesn't apply if you know you'll have to check a bag, natch, but makes getting on and off the plane easier, with only a few minutes added at the carousel--which time is spent in the duty-free anyway.

AA allows 2 check bags free to Latin America, South America, Asia, and the Dominican. The whole itinerary is considered international. Europe gets one free, $50 for the second.

I called AA and a spokewoman said "they realize that mongers have to negotiate regularly with chicas so in order to keep our business since we are frequent travelers, they understand waving the fee is in their best interests". Furthermore, she expressed that "they understand that mongers have specific needs and we require more space for miscellaneous items such as 2 - 24 packs of condoms, an assortment vibrators, lubes/oils (water and oil based), little gifts, lollipops/chocolates, various sexually exploitive outfits, etc."

Gotta be careful with that FA stuff--our UK brothers take that to mean "nothing", as "I know sweet FuckAll about Chicago". The dangers of a multi-national Board...
