Well, I cashed in my voucher and I couldn't be happier (well, I will be happier when I am in CR). The process was a bit awkward so I will explain so those that haven't done it can be reassured that it works.

1) The voucher covers everything including taxes and all fees.
2) You make a reservation and get your record #. Don't pay, just reserve. Since the system only holds for 24 hours, you need to call them.
3) Tel # 800-433-7300
4) Skip all the computer voice crap and just say agent.
5) You would think with the identification number on the voucher it could all be electronic. Nope, you need to send it in. I made a copy just in case.
5) On the outside envelop, you need to put your flight # and record # under your return address.
6) They will give you the address.
7) I was able to book two different tickets. I had to $54 dollars on the second ticket to cover the remaining balance (2 X $277/ticket = $554). If you only use part of the voucher, they will send the remaining balance in another voucher.
8) It takes about a week for them to receive the voucher and send you a confirmation email.

My first trip is 1/13 so I think if you book 1 month in advance you should have no problem. The second trip is 3/3 so I can party with Nhhank.

Nh, first round of waters is on me. :P

There is an other way if you have an AA ticket office or airport counter close to you.

Make your reservation online and put it on hold for twenty four hours and then go to the AA office give them your voucher and record locator number and they will issue your eticket. One day is the longest you can put your reservation on hold. If you are unable to get to the ticket office in that time frame you can, and I have done this, go online each day cancel your reservation and then make it again. Sometimes you get a better fare by doing this for a few days.

It is easy for me to do this because the AA ticket office in Sabana is only a 5 minute drive from my place.

Dean,

What was the voucher for? Did AA screw something up and have to compensate you?

They oversold the flight and asked for volunteers. I saw them checking things so I stood at the counter and was the first volunteer. I guess you could also check your seating assignment online to see how booked the flight is going to be, or ask at the counter when checking in. Regardless of the process, it worked.

Almond,

You got a voucher. What airlines and was it all electronic?

Another idea to think about before you pay for the ticket online, is to pick the seat you want while doing the reservation. This way, if just one of the flights you're choosing doesn't have seats available, just like it almost happened to me in 2008 on a trip to see my girlfriend, you can keep playing with the different flight combinations for whichever airline you want, until you get a confirmed seat. Worked for me, and i got to where i was going because i paid attention to this little detail.

since we're sharing here i'll give up one of mine. check in online 24 hours before your flight and not only do you get a better seat selection but if you arrive late and the flight is closed you are still able to fly. saved my ass once when biden clogged up traffic the day i was leaving
