Kickstand, I have no idea what you were thinking or whether anyone else was thinking the same thing, whatever that was, but it all seemed pretty straightforward to me since this is the Hotels, Resorts, Accomodations &
Transportation! section.
Blue Devil, I'm not saying your "trusty bus station map" is wrong but my sources have a slightly different location about 8 blocks west of the one you gave. The location you gave, Calle 2 between Aves. 1 y 3, is in right in front of the main post office and while there may be a bus stop there, I certainly don't remember any bus station. I rely primarily on
http://www.thebusschedule.com/cr/index.php for my bus research (and I highly recommend anyone else regularly using buses in CR or elsewhere in CA bookmark it). According to them the "Transp. Grecia San Jose" company terminal is located on Calle 18 between Aves. 5 y 7 (costado oeste Abonos Agro). Here is a link to their map. Their phone number is 2258-2004 in case you want to call and confirm that.
ID, that site also lists the transit time as
only 1 hour though I'm sure you're right that it might take somewhat more than that IF the traffic is particularly bad.
The departure schedule listed on that site shows service running from 5:35AM to 10:10PM with buses leaving every 30 minutes (at 5 and 35 minutes past the hour). Based on that one could leave as late as 8:35AM bus and make it to Grecia by 10AM but that wouldn't leave a lot of safety margin for unseen delays. OTOH, I would think the 8:05AM bus should provide more than enough leeway. I'm also guessing that, traveling in that direction at that time of day, one could probably just show up shortly before that departure time and find plenty of empty seats, but if you want to play it even safer you should either go to the station the day before to purchase your ticket or else plan to arrive at the terminal that morning about another 30 minutes or so before your desired departure time. Even so, this is a little later than the time that BlueDevil suggested, yet still allows for nearly an hour safety margin.
BTW, the bus info on
costa-rica-guide.com,
www.anywherecostarica.com and the ever-popular
official ICT website all match the info from the site I use.
Finally, one last website that anyone who travels regularly by bus in CR might want to bookmark is the
www.aresep.go.cr website, which has spreadsheets with the latest official regulated bus fares updated regularly (though I doubt any of the CR busfares are going to be a major concern for anyone here, let alone the current 770 fare for SJ>Grecia).
