For a taxi ride from the Airport to the SL. Last couple years I've been using one of the regular drivers from SL but each trip seems like the ride goes up a couple $$. I think last time he charged me $26 plus I gave him a tip so cost me $30. Wondering how that compares to a Taxi fare. Thx. |

The hotel's driver from Castillo to SJO charged $22 last month. I took a red taxi to SJO in July. The driver took off without starting the meter. I asked to turn it on and he did. Down the road he pulled out a Taxi Co printed list of fares for longer trips. Other cities, tourist locations, SJO... The list showed the fare to SJO as c13,000. Sounded a bit high to me. An Orange airport taxi on the meter a week earlier cost c11,000 for the opposite trip. I've since learned that the taxi co's cannot legaly charge a "set" fare. They are supposed to use the maria for all fares. I usually don't mind paying a premium for using a hotel's driver for a ride to the airport. They are usually more personable than most taxi drivers and have a nicer ride that a clapped-out Hyundai. |

I took a red taxi from SL to SJO on Nov 29th it cost 20 dollars off the meter. I ask the driver about how much it would cost before we left. If he said more I would have asked for the meter. The trip to SL cost 26 dollars in orange airport taxi, paid at counter inside the terminal. |

I always negotiate a fare with a driver of a red taxi when going from airport to gulch upon arrival & gulch to airport when leaving country. The most I have ever paid is 8k colones. They always ask for higher price or say we'll use meter & I refuse & say take it or leave. They usually take it, if not the 2nd guy I offer the 8k to does. |

Using the meter, the ride to the airport from SL/LA area should be under 10,000, that's just under $18. From the airport, it's a flat rate, and it should be $20-22. |

Regulator cancels permit of airport service Taxis Unidos By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The price regulating agency had pulled the permits of Taxis Unidos. The operator of the orange vehicles that service Juan SantamarÃa airport. The cancelation of the permits seems like a final action, but the company has been given three months to terminate its service and turn in the license plates of the 75 vehicles it operates. The agency, the Authoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicos said it was taking the action because Taxis Unidos does not use meters in its cabs. Such meters, informally called marias, are required by law. Taxis Unidos has been considered a top quality transportation firm in the Central Valley. Its drivers are full-time employees and receive the benefits required by law. The drivers wear uniforms and the vehicles are air conditioned. The orange taxis only make trips from and to the airport from Central Valley locations. Drivers decline to make local runs even when they have an empty vehicle. Other taxi drivers for years have complained that the firm does not comply with the law and questioned the permits to work from the airport. Taxi fares are collected at a booth at the exit to the airport passenger terminal based on the destination the passenger gives. Passengers picked up in the Central Valley make a payment at a booth located just outside the departure terminal. The payments have been flat fees generally based on the distance. The amount is comparable to what would be charged via a meter. The regulating authority held a hearing on the complaints against the taxi firm. The agency said that the three-month delay in revoking the permits was to give the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes and the Consejo de Transporte Público time to take steps to replace Taxis Unidos. However, it is likely the firm will appeal the decision to the courts. |

I guess they didn't like using meters because their margin wasn't as good. Afterall, they couldn't rip us off like with the flat fee. And that asshole collecting the money wasn't able to arbitrarily decide the fares anymore, based on how new you looked. So they went back to flat fare. They can appeal meaning that the Orange taxis will still be picking you up when you arrive in 2012.

The updated website is http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr/ . I have never paid a luggage fee, although I am not hauling around a bunch of stuff. That being said, typically I will have a larger, "soft" carry-on; a stuffed laptop case, and larger, hard shelled checked bag. |
