AA fudged up my reservations, causing me to spend a night in MIA on the way back from a trip to Panama. Great customer service of theirs doesn't see the error of their ways and there's no comp'd accommodations.

So, I find myself looking for a cheap place to stay by the airport for one night in Feb. ... any recommendations? Or will a simple search on yahoo/travelocity/priceline/hotwire/etc. bring up the usual suspects?

Define "cheap" and "by the airport".

There's everything from 4 stars down to rent-by-the-hour love motels fleabags. There's even an hotel IN the airport (used to be a Hilton).

Off the top of my head, within a mile of the MIA entrance there are Wyndhams, Comfort Inns, Sleep Inns, Sheratons, Radissons, Crowne Plazas, Holiday Inns, Marriot Courtyards, Embassy Suites, etc. etc.

I noticed you said, "one night in February". I hope it's not Super Bowl weekend or the two weeks leading to it -- hotels will be booked and / or will jack up their prices.

I think the airport hotel is independent now, and will set you back about $119 before the taxes, which are probably nice as somebody has to pay for the Marlins' new stadum and the port tunnel. There are all your usual hotels in the immediate vicinity, I only have personal knowledge of the airporty Hilton. Stayed there in 2007 (as were the Miami Hurricanes as they were playing Texas A and M on a Thursday at the former Orange Bowl) and it was a great hotel, though it had passed its heyday. If trying to get best deal, my suggestion is priceline.com and select airport area and name your price. But as has been said, if it is Super Bowl weekend that will be expensive.

...Then on the other hand, how well do you know folks in the Miami area? I'm gonna catch a ton of flak for this one.

Brother MH--Yes, you were exactly whom I was thinking of...though JM is another prominent Miami-area Brother. Another of my late-night semi-alcohol-fueled brainstorms/ farts.

Er... to the best of my knowledge there isn't a Ramada Inn close to the airport. Did you reserve at Ramada Inn Miami Airport North? If so, that's 8 miles from MIA plus you are right smack in the middle of lovely Hialeah, FL.

Hope they have an airport shuttle.
