When entering CR with tourist passport, does immigration check to see if you have outbound ticket? I want to fly into CR and at some point travel to Nicaragua and eventually fly out of Managua. If required, can I buy a cheap bus ticket to meet the requirement? Any help??

My buddy (Non-US Citizen) wasn't allowed through unless he could show proof of his return ticket. It took almost an hour for him to track down a Continental agent inside the terminal to print one for him.

Well, I flew in last month and wasn't asked for any evidence of a return ticket. Maybe that rule is for non-US citizens?

Being a US citizen, I have been to CR a few times and I have never been asked for a return ticket. But that is one of the official requirements listed by CR Immigration.

I have entered costa rica probably 30 times in the last 3 years. I have never been asked for a return ticket. They typically only ask for it when they suspect you may be wanting to stay, or you have had a problem in the past.

I have purchased several Costa Rica originating round trip tickets, and I am not a resident. Never had a problem. Yes, this was Continental, but I have never even been questioned.

I've been asked for a return ticket only once when I crossed into CR from Panama in Sixaola.

I guess I've been extremely lucky. I've made more than 50 trips to CR over the past several years, and have never been asked to see a return ticket, not even once. Then again, if they asked - I'd simply show it to them.

My buddy who is married to a tica, not a resident and has been coming here for 25 years was hassled about a return ticket. He has extra pages in his passport, and the agent said his passport was feo. As he electronically ticketed, he had no papercopy of the return ticket. After the hassle, he was let in.

Until now, I had assumed that the itinerary info showed up on the computers. Perhaps it does and the agent was being an ahole, but then again, maybe not.

For the first time in 130 trips I was asked last week for proof of my return ticket. I had to go to the Taca counter inside the secure area and bought a refundable ticket. I am out the $25 ticketing fee. I just bought an open ticket from Ticabus for $21 that I will have with me to avoid future hassels.

And for any of you guys living here, they are pretty easy to dummy up. I had a friend who did it for years with either travelocity or expedia... Doctored a bit before printing.

In the past I've had open-jaw international itineraries although never in Latin America. I always carry a copy of my itinerary with me so have never had a problem.
