I've been a pretty devoted guest of the Castillo for the past 17 or 18 trips, but I think that my new HQ in SJ is going to be La Amistad. I stayed there for 4 nights last week in room 309. Not only did I not hear the train that everyone was so concerned about, I found the staff to be great, from the guys at the door/desk to Asta in the restaurant. The food was very good, I really recommend the spaghetti carbonara. The second day there, I slept through the train. The next day, I was awake at 8 a.m. when it came through & I could barely hear it.

It was a much nicer room than I usually have at the Castillo, even though it was only a queen room. The bed was really comfortable. I'm on the LA bandwagon for sure.

I would definitely agree that even a standard room at LA/TS is nicer then anything at Castillo..

I agree also I was in 108 very near the train at nite it was very quiet. Im a early morning person so was allready up by 7 am. But the train never bothered my afternoon naps." Warren Zevon" Ill sleep when im dead.

I also stayed at the LA Rm#303. I also had no trouble with the train. The bed was comfy and the shower was hot and had good preasure. My wingman was next door in Rm#304 he also had a great experence. Free breakfast was very good. Check in and out was fast and friendly. The free laundry was a great touch. House keeping did a fine job. all in all we will stay at LA from now on. DR

The rooms on that part of the third floor are on the west side of the hotel and thus as far away from the tracks as you can get.

Did you walk to SL from LA? I hear that it is close.

I am just wondering if it is a safe and convenient walk.

It's very close. Just down the street and around the corner. Safe walk, and very convenient.

I would say it is about a 30-35 second walk sober and a 50-55 second walk drunk.... if you took a taxi from there you should be charged 2k Colones just for making the taxi driver either drive around the block or put the car in reverse to avoid the small one way portion of the street in front of SL.
