Does anyone have information regarding the new highway to the coast? When will it be ready and how long will it take to get to Jaco from SJO? Also, where will you get onto to it from the airport?

Thats an article that says the road has been under planning and construction for 30 years. I think the completion date is 2025 now.

A guy was telling me about a great investment in Jaco. He said, " you'll be able to drive there in 45 minutes when the NEW highway is finished."

If I can drive there in 45 minutes, I'll rather drive back home and sleep in my own bed .

The section from Sabana to Santa Ana is about 90% complete. They have had a problem near Orintina where the work was damaging an aquafier. The court initially stopped construction but have allowed it to resume with some changes being made.

Completion is still set for sometime in 2010.

You really think so ? This ever changing date has been dangled to countless investors for years. I think this is a better to wait until someone drives the entire stretch first approach .

I think this would have been a much better project for the Chinese to have funded than building the new Saprissa Stadium in Sabana Park. Put a bunch of ticos to work and all you'll get is a bunch of shovel leaning. Import a bunch of chinese coolies to work on it and the road would probably be finished in no time.

Major diffrence from the past attempts. It is now being built as a concession by a Spanish consortium. They get their investment back by collecting tolls over the life of the concession. No tolls no payback so it is incumbent on them to get the road open and collect tolls.

Hmm. Still Costa Rica to try to mess it up, maybe with more delays such as the "aquafier" situation. I would not invest on anything in Jaco counting on this highway but I wouldn't suggest investing in Jaco anyway.

Maybe if they do finish this highway to Jaco, I can test to see if my Hepatitis B vaccine works in the high fecal count ocean water.

Damn, hatin on Jaco. I'm surprised more guys don't catch something in that pit you call the gulch. I like it and I hate it. After spending a few days there I need to scrub myself. Black socks and beaches don't mix anyway. Back to the highway. It has been laid out for years. Had to travel by it on interbus once when there was a detour. And with the Spanish concession it will be finished, on time maybe. I think the time between SJ and Jaco is greatly exagerated.

It's not THAT bad a trip now for the 2-1/2 hours it takes to travel. Why exactly do mongers have to get there so quickly anyway when the the Beatle Bar doesn't hot up 'til nighttime? This highway is (to my fevered mind) being built for Tico commerce and relaxation, not us or the bewildered Gringo condo owners. Brothers, you're on vacation--relax and have an Imperial or 2 on Interbus. Jeez. And make time to say "Hello" to Thirdworld when you finally do get there. A trek across the Sahara or the frozen Siberian tundra, I coukld see you'd want to shorten, but this pleasant journey?? Maybe a seaplane out of the SJO domestic airport is more your speed--get you there pronto.

Have you actually taken the trip? I have, and it was closer to 3 hours, depending on just how many slow vehicles are ahead of you. And one time, while admittedly slightly hung over, I was nauseated the entire time. Had to keep my eyes shut and take deep breaths because the hairpin turns kept the stomach churning the entire time. Going in a car or van was slightly better than interbus, but again, not fun. I've flown to Quepos several times, and prefer the shimmy of the plane to the churning of the bus. I don't think Jaco has an airport though.

All the above, IMO, begs the question, why the Phuck does anyone go to Jaco? The Beatle bar was fun, no doubt, but didn't make up for the trip or for the hot, stinky hellhole that is Jaco. Again, just my opinion, and I know Jaco has its fans, but it also has many detractors.
