I want to surf a few days but I hear Jaco kinda sucks. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go to hit great waves? THanks in advance! |

I've seen good waves in Tamarindo.....but in June it was as flat as a millpond. Cahuita on the Caribean side is sometimes good. But, surf is situational as always and everywhere. |

I'd be careful about the casual dismissal of the Jaco area as a surfing destination--PM ThirdWorld or check his Website for details--yeah I know he posted but still....  Yeah, just joking... The waves have been very good here lately. Jaco has been good and Hermosa has been big and great shape. I'm working to get a new consistent surf report on the website soon. Don't dismiss Guanacaste. Tamarindo is flat a lot of the time, but surrounding beaches have good surf. Avellanes, Playa Grande, Playa Negra....

Just got back from our 2nd surf trip Tuesday. Jaco actually had some great waves. I didn't go in (never do in Jaco) but my buddy said they were among the best this trip. Hermosa seems to always be very good. Dominical was awesome as always and Pavones was killer. Kinda rainy this trip but always awesome.

I'm not a surfer, but I've checked out the surf between Jaco and Dominical...very strong waves... and dangerous undertow. The Caribbean side, in the vicinity of Puerto Viejo, is excellent... plenty of surfers from around the world come here. Salsa Brava, which is on the southern edge of PV, has some impressive curls because of the coral reefs which extend 1/4 mile into the ocean. Falling off your board in Salsa Brava is an option I don't want to think about...ouch! |

Thirdworld is right, Avellanas, Playa Negra and Plays Grande are consistently good. But, there are some rocks and you can get skinned up. |

Cod, Are you surfing the shore or takin' a boat out to the rock? Big difference in my humble opinion. Shore break or rock break? Whatever, I'm. gettin to old to really catch a wave 'cept on a long board.

I have never even surfed before but it is one of those things I want to do and learn and get somewhat decent at it--so I know that I can do it. So I plan on wrecking alot so surfing above coral woudl make my day probably not so great.

Don't try to learn at Hermosa, Puerto Viejo or Playa Negra. Jaco might be a good place to try if it isn't to big. Tamarindo bay is probably one of the easiest places to learn I guess. Those 1st 3 spots can get really hairy sometimes. Boca Baranca is a big long mushy wave but the paddle would probably kill you. Are you landlocked where you live now? Florida is a good place to learn to surf. When I first started surfing I used a wooden skim board and swim fins just to learn how to catch the wave and shoot down the line. Paddling and catching the wave is the hardest part. Get a board and start paddling it around to get a good feel for it. Jaco can get pretty gnarly too sometime don't go drown yourself.
