Post subject:  La Amistad: Down for the Count????

I am neew to the board, but not new to Costa Rica or women. I have found reading the forum very good.

My question is about La Amistad and what the group and really those men who prefer the Amistad and have been there since this commuter train has been running: Will you keep going back?

I ask because it sounds like the noise from the train and it's whistle is just beyond horrible and goes on for much of the daylight hours. Is that horn blaring during the entire breakfast period? Can you talk when it's going on? I've heard train horns that are so intense you really have to stop all talking until the horn stops. How can you relax in your room if it is so bad? What about mid day sessions with women in your room and stuff? That horn sounds like a major turn off.

I've read hear that the hotel owner is getting a lawyer, but that isn't going to work is it? Seems like it's pretty much just bad luck for this hotel and maybe one that a guy shouldn't use anymore?

Any help would be appreciated because I need to make a hotel choice and at first it was going to be this hotel but what will all this noise, I can't see how I'd be having any fun over the noise??? Thank you.

I have no idea if this is feasible, not knowing the layout of this hotel and all,but around Austin they put up noise shields(that is just what I call them) to reflect the noise back the opposite direction. They have them between the airport and surrounding neighborhoods and whenever they run a busy highway through a neighborhood they do the same thing.Unfortunately with a train alot of the noise is vibrational, which is impossible to solve..but the worst part of a train is that horn...

I have been on painfully loud construction sites where a train coming by was still loud enough to drown out everything else.

I've stayed in Room 310, which faces the tracks, and the majority of the wall that faces those tracks are actually windows.

It did get very loud and I had trouble trying to sleep in. I could even feel the room shake.

I was really hoping that this train was just a one-time thing. If it runs everyday, then I don't knowwwww.

Bottom Line... It's louder than shit. You can hear it at the SL. Granted nothing near the level at LA but still loud. No gates at the crossing. Ouch. I always carry ear plugs in CR but you can still hear the train.

I was in room 309 not too long ago and you could hear it but it wasn't deafening. I'm an early riser so it didn't bother me. I understand that Matt, along with some other neighboring businesses are trying to get the city to have warning lights installed so that the horn blowing can be eliminated.

Lots of luck with that. I do not know of a single grade crossing in Costa Rica that has lights or gates installed. I would guess the only way they will get them there is to pay for them.

How much time does it take for the train to pass by and how often does it drive by ?

I have always stayed at La Amistad and the train is not an issue for me. For crying out loud, it is at the most a 30-45 second disturbance. I normally play all night and sleep during the day. On my last trip last month, I stay at the closest room/penthouse # 202 to the tracks. Yes, you can hear the train but to me was not a big issue. And already booked #312 aka J0sie’s penthouse for November. La Amistad was #1 and currently #2 on Trip Advisor for Costa Rica’s hotels. That should put all of this in perspective.

Take what some people said with a big grain of salt. Do your research and then decide.

Back during my trip in early June, there was a two-car passenger train passing by regularly, might have been the early startup of the current train. I was in room 214, on the side closest to the tracks, and while I did hear and feel the train, I wasn't too bothered by it. If I woke up, the beds are comfy enough that I went back to sleep easily enough. Oh, I also was in bed by midnight, so got plenty of sleep in before the first train came through. :D

A shout-out to Brother Josie for the TA link. Some of the comments had pix--I haven't been down since the bar opened so saw it opened.

bottom line it passes close to the hotel. right next to the east wall. it comes early and sometimes often. i have grown used to it as a frequent lodger.
but different guys handle the horn differently. some just hit quick short blasts as they come in to the area. others just lay into it. i was not kidding when i said i have looked out the window and seen the asshole looking up and smiling. often there isn't even anything on the train. just empty cars being towed.
but i agree with whoever said the beds are nice enough to go right back to sleep. SL has its share of other kinds of noise too.
now that owner and his constant desire to be bought beer. that gets a little unnerving.  :x

I like that people have responded, but for me this is not a loyalty question....it's a noise intensity question.

I have been at La Amistad when the train worked....but it was going by only once or twice a day....and was not a "commuter train".

Everything I gather now is that the thing starts rolling at 6am with workers hanging on as they "commute" to their low wage job and this goes on all morning long.....and picks up again in the afternoon when the same guys are going home.

I'm most interested in comments from guys who have been in the hotel in the regular rooms.....not the high dollar rooms, please.....and have had to deal with the horn. I have been told you can't even hold a good talk during breakfast without having to stop and wait for the horn to stop? I have heard the whole hotle shudders?????

For the regular guys: Will you keep going back now that you know a train is horn blasting from 6am until.....what.....10am....every 15 mins or so?

And please, this is a serious question...no cracks from the Sportsman's Lodge crowd like Cujo who or whoever....it is very clear from you guys you get cheap rates at SL for shilling. J0sie is the only regular who has posted....but I've read his posts and he gets a discounted rate at Amistad and stays in teh swanky penthouses. I am just a regular schmoe......I would like to read posts from regular Amistad guys....El Ciego has made it clear he won't be back *but I cannot tell if that is due to the horn or if it is because he can't find a hook to put a robe on???? Who travels with a robe?

Oh well.....please...regular Amistad guys....please keep posting so I can figure out if it is time to move on......heck....even to Morazon if need be....

How bad is bad when it comes to this new commuter train?? Thanks a bunch......

Ha, no worries "west palm" you've been around this board for a few seconds. You sure do a lot of reading especially if you think I'm any sort of shill.

Quit hiding who this really is, you already have special characters who vouch for this hotel, quit begging for things you want to hear.

I won't even comment on the rest of the post, you're so see thru...

Pretty lame man... :|
