I got home last night from 6 days in SJO at the Dunn Inn. It was a pleasure to stay there. It is close to all Bario Amon attractions. $45 per night for a standard room with the CRT discound . No Tax waiver for cash. The food at the restaurant was on a par with the SL. The bartenders were great. Happy hour with 2-fers from 4-6 PM daily.
The standard room was small with A/C, a Queen bed , and very clean with cable, safe, and mini bar.
The staff was great and mostly bi-lingual. Even the chambermaids and maintenance people always had a smile and a friendly greeting.
My first babe of the vacation between "O Papis" told me to check out Hotel Castillo.
I had breakfast at the Peruvian Restaurant at the Castillo. It was the best gallo pinto I have had in years. After breakfast I checked out the hotel. The standard room was larger than the Dunn with the same stuff w/o the A/C. The Dunn has a better vibe and ambiance IMHO. Price according to the manager on duty $38 with CRT discount for cash; done deal.
A warning to light sleepers. New train service M-F from SJO to Herrida has started for the rush hours. They really lean on the whistle.
One CRT guy staying at La Amistad said he thought the train was passing right next door.
It woke me up in the AM and siesta several times at the Dunn; which is the farthest away from the tracks.
I like the Dunn but a cheap airfare between retirement checks would send me to the Castillo.

Great info Old Salt, Iwill try it next time.I stayed at the Amistad.. it was ok, damm train was a pain. The staff was great, but the food in the restaurant was alittle pricey especially when all you want is finger food or a sandwich ( does not exist after 2pm). I found myself going to the SL to eat.
