I HATE posting anything about the SL because its already getting busy and I want to make sure I can always get a room there, but I think the owner and their staff deserve the massive kudos I give them.

The bar staff is excellent. I hear people complain about the speed of the service but I never had a problem with ANY of it. The staff has to be the most friendly I've seen in any bar ANYWHERE. Awesome.

The front desk staff is incredibly helpful and always smiling. The cleaning crew is rather quick and friendly too. I needed towels, my room cleaned and to check out quickly and ALL were remedied with the speed and efficiency of any Holiday Inn I've ever stayed at.

Also, the overall ambience can't be beat if you're looking for a quiet morning, relaxing afternoon and party in the evening.

Highly recommended.

Agree 100%. Which makes this even more surprising -- a little birdie told me SL fired a couple of our favorite bar waitresses this very same week.

I asked in another thread if anyone could confirm whether this is true, so I'm posting this here to see if someone knows something. My apologies for the hijack, but I'm really shocked if this turns out to be true.

Mysnoatb,

Sorry buddy, but the word on SL has been out for a long time, and guys have been wringing their hands about its popularity since I've been a member of this board. If I want to make certain I get a room, I book as far in advance as possible.

CiaoCiao tiene razon.... he's right. If you want a room at the SL, particularly in either the "Modern" section or the new "Mansion" section, better book well in advance. For instance, I booked my room in the modern section last February for the week starting Sept. 1...and the rest of the modern section was booked before SuperBowl weekend.

Why is the Sportsmen's so popular? Book a room there for your next trip to C.R. and find out. I have never encountered better hotel staff or ambience in my life. Good stuff!

Ditto, SL went from a great place to stay to THE place to stay years ago...

As Ciao said, its mandatory to book in advance if your seeking a particular room.

Man, the SL will be rollin' deep next week 8)

I'm afraid they did. According to the birdie, Andrea was one of the waitresses sacked. Can any CRT locals confirm if this is true?

It's true. I have only heard one side of the story, so I won't comment on it, but she is gone.

I like Andrea as a bartender very much, and I am sorry to see her go. I only ever got the very best service from her.

Thanks for the confirmation. I agree with you 100% - Andrea was a great bartender and bar waitress. Always pleasant, attentive and helpful.

The SL will be lessened by her absence.

Speaking of the quality of Staff at Sprortsmans...

Well it's about to get better.

Bill told me tonight that he has hired Christina ( Former Del Rey Coffee bartender) as a new addition..

Hurray !!

I don't know them well since I only stayed there once but there were a couple that didn't seem real happy and service a little mixed up (not complaining just mentioning because both proly knew even when I was there Aug. 12th wknd. that their time was limited so didn't care as much).

The one was in her 30s with glasses (Andrea??) and the other 20s in the morning. Again both were real nice but did seem like something was going on.

I wonder if they fire the girls when younger more attractive girls and that maybe provide some benes for the owners become available? CR is still Latin America afterall.

i am pretty sure they (your bank ? ...or sportmen) charge an extra $10 and some change for using your card for a international sale,,,I have seen it the past 3 trips ,,,,also i paid on a friday and the funds didnt show up on my account until tueday,,, but I will say this my bill was 100% correct 20% discount, all restaurant charges and phone bill....this was the best trip as far as no problems with my bill,,,

SL does not add any extra fees for using a credit card.

Your bank will add a international transaction fee. It ranges from 1 to 4%, I haven't heard of more than 4% but I'm sure there's a CC out there like that. There may also be a card that doesn't charge int'l or currency fees at all. Bank of America recently raised theirs from 3 to 4%. Some son of a bitch banks charge a currency conversion fee on top of the int'l fee if the charge is made in colones. Whenever possible, ask that they charge you in dollars, so you don't get double hit with fees.

First, check with your CC to see what their fees are, so there's no surprises. Also, while you are speaking with them, tell them your exact travel dates so that they don't block your card. Some banks will deny charges and block the card if they aren't given notice about foreign travel.
