Wow, the Costa Rician economy must be doing very well. Hotel Amistad has increased their rates from $50.00 to $69.00. They have no bar, no casino and no pretty women. I guess they want to compete with the Sportmen (has a bar and women and has a $69.00 rate) and the Del Rey (has a bar, casino and women, rate is a little higher but not much). Guess I will be looking for a new place to stay in San Jose.

Whoa Brother Richards--You're not comparing apples and oranges but maybe Delicious with Jonathans. The daily discount at La Amistad is 30% greater and SL doesn't advertise a much greater weekly discount. You can get a pretty good room at La Amistad for $60 rack rate and they are all quieter than some at SL. I'm not arguing in favor of 1 place over the other--just asking you to to do a net net cost comparo.

What is funny about the use of these "flat screen plasma/lcd televisions" is the reality that there is no digital tv in Costa Rica. As well, there is no HDTV in Costa Rica, per se.

There are two companies that can get you hooked into to a USA beemed DISH Network system whereby you need three discreet dishes, all much larger than than the pizza dish being used in the USA. These companies provide you with a NYC billing address which enables you to receive, also, the network feeds. And these signals will be in HD where available on the USA system. The dishes are custom built in CR.

I am aware that the owner of Sportsman Lodge uses this 3 dish system for his personal HDTV television set up, but the HDTV set-up is not used in rooms being rented although the rooms do have a digital feed and picture.

Edited to enhance clarity and accuracy....Sorry Bill!

If you're going over the holidays Amistad is offering a 25% daily discount.

Have you stayed with us or are you assuming we are not worth the value? We have not been $50 for over two years. We do offer specials and do offer 25% off weekly stays for the rack rate which puts a queen room around $52 and a king room around $60 before tax for a weekly stay. We did increase prices in 2009 on penthouses and jacuzzi rooms and left the prices alone on King and Queen rooms. We also have three rooms starting at $65 for the conservative guest. We did not change our discount policy for 2009. You can still get a room for $50 - you just have to stay a week :D. You are right we do not have women soliciting in the Hotel (there are plenty of places around for that). We are a different style of hotel than the Sportsmen and hope he is full everyday. It is good for our business. We are nothing like the Del Rey nor have made the claim. We have put in over a million dollars in remodelation, so if you have not stayed with us for over a year it is a different class of Hotel now. We have put in a bar and restaurant and are awaiting final approval. We hope you come by and see the changes we have made. We value the business.

Matt, just one less cheapskate you need to deal with. As for myself will be enjoying room 312 in January and February. Thank you for the improvements and a well run place. I will not stay any where else.

This is posted under the holiday special by admin

Also There is a question about rooms, sizes, types, location etc. Matt has put together this little breakdown of the various room rates, Etc.

La Amistad Room Descriptions:

For the CRT Member's, Member's are always asking questions about our rooms. A list follows for room type, amenities and prices as of Feb 1st 2009

Rooms that contain King Beds ($79 per night)

Room 210
Room 211
Room 102 (handicap accessable)
Room 307
Room 301

The following rooms are Penthouses (all are King Beds)

Room 312 ($139 Per Night) Contains a dry sauna and Jacuzzi. This is the room with the balcony. It has recently been remodeled. The wet sauna and large closet were removed and replaced with sofas, loveseats, new furniture, microwave, wine fridge and Normal fridge. A 42 inch LCD flat screen has been added to the room. Room 313 ($65 per night) is an ajoining room with seperate bath, bedroom and sitting room. The bed is slightly smaller than a Queen due to room shape. It can be combined to room 312 or rented seperately.

Room 311 ($119 per night) Contains a Full Kitchen, seperate sitting room, seperate bedroom and two bathrooms. We are planning to remove the second bath and install a dry sauna. The room contains a 46 inch plazma tv in the sitting room and a 30 inch in the bedroom

Room 310 ($119 per night) This is the loft penthouse. Currently the bedroom is in the loft section. We are considering moving it below and moving the sitting room upstairs. please let me know your thoughts. Currently there is a sofa that sits about 10 people comfortably, fireplace that is wood buring, (but we only will allow candles for safety reasons, a large closet and desk. We will be removing the closet and desk and adding a dry sauna and jacuzzi in 2009.

Rooms 201, 202 and 203 (Priced from $119-$149 per night) are the new penthouses. All will contain a two person jaccuzi with 28 jets and dry sauna. They are different sizes and shapes and upon completion i will update with individual rooms. All will contain sitting rooms and King beds.
We are accepting reservations as of the 25th of January for the new rooms.

Rooms 106 and 212 are studio apartments ($99 per night) These rooms are being modified as we speak to include a King bed and jaccuzi. Both contain a mini kitchen (stove top, fridge, toaster oven, microwave...).

All other rooms with the exception of Room 105 and Room 207 contain Queen beds ($69 per night). Room 105 and 207 contain a full bed (priced at $65 per night). All rooms contain refriderator, safe, a/c (with the exception of one) and 30 inch TV. We made the mistake of using carpet in some of the rooms and are in the process of changing them to ceramic tile in 2009. We will be adding carpet runners and oriental rugs in common areas to control noise of high heels.

We are scheduled for an inspection in Jan 2009 for the final approval for the bar. In the event it is not available by Feb 1st we will open it up to guests to use as a bring your own beer and wine section. Working Girls WILL NOT be allowed to solicite in the common areas, but as always will be welcome when accompanied by a guest of the hotel, bar or restaurant. As always they will be required to show proper identification and proof of age.

We will not be changing our discount policy for CRT members (15% off daily, 25% off weekly and 35% off monthly stays. We will be offering 10% off at the bar and restaurant when opened.

I hope this clarifies room types and styles. Please feel free to contact myself or the Hotel for any problems or questions.

We appreciate your loyalty and try our best for all guests. We offer rooms for all budgets. Not everyone can afford or wants to pay for a penthouse (I am one of them. Good bed, hot shower, nice tv and i am happy.) Richard i hope you come in and give us a chance. I think you will be happy with the pricing when you see the new rooms.

Matt,

I stayed with you in November. Just wanted to let everyone here know it was a really great experience. I stayed in a queen bed room. Great bed and bathroom and wonderful free breakfast. It is quieter than places like the DR or SL and for me that is a good thing. Also, the front desk staff was really helpful with planning some day trips.

Kudos Matt for running such an excellent operation and I know I will stay with you again.

Quietman,
Well put and I concur. You can't please everyone, all the time. IMO, Matt runs a great operation, and I hope he continues to do what he's doing. If someone thinks La Amistad is overpriced (especially after CRT discount), then they should look elsewhere! There's usually vacancies at CCI or Nuevo Johnson.

Pura Vida Richards,
MG

If anyone noticed Richards went off on a little posting tangent. I'm guessing he was fueled by a wee bit of alcohol. :D
