While the proposed limits, 22x18x10 inches, somewhat an overkill I agree with the concept.

Airline personnel refuse to deal with the problem. At the boarding gate they have a template that the bag must fit in to qualify as hand luggage and they have a rule of just one plus a small personal item. They then watch passengers struggle down the jetway with 2 large bags and never say a word. This creates the problems mentioned in the article.

Having the template moved to the security checkpoint takes the enforcement away from the customer orientated timid airline staff and puts in the hands of wannabee gestapo agents of TSA who actually enjoy humiliating and embarrassing the traveling public.

All in all just another indignity and loss of freedom being heaped upon the American public in the name of fighting terrorism.

The real solution is less government regulation and more enforcement of company rules by airline personnel.

I agree with Brother ID that off-loading responsibility for all manner of things to the indifferent and the surly is not the solution. Actually, I posted to get that and other comments.

I think that they should ban any luggage with wheels from the airplane cabin. After all, it's shpposed to be CARRY ON, not drag on! Depending on the bag and the airplane model, some of the large wheelie bags barely fit in the overhead bins. If you can't CARRY IT then it is not a carry-on! My first rule of travel: If you can't carry your own bags then you have packed too much!

I agree that realistic rules are needed. Especially since airlines have begun to charge for checked bags there is more pressure for passengers to try to carry on only. I believe that the airlines should be required to allow at least one checked bag for free and then enforce the already in place carry on size restrictions.

I sometimes play "Checked-bag Roulette" with Spirit. If the flight is jam-packed, to reduce turn-around times, Spirit will sometimes check bags free at the gate. Of course I don't do this with a bag I know should have been checked ( size, weight or contents).

That is a great game to play/ get back at Spirit with Jazz. I have done it many times, especially when you board very late you can count on checking at the gate.

IMO, they should check the bags all along the way, at the counter, at TSA, at the gate, and on the plane. And don't let the morons turn the bags sideways!!!! Wheels in first or check it!! GRRRR :twisted: :evil:

I always carryon my laptop, cameras, and a change of close clothes. At 6'1 280 lb if they lost my luggage I'm screwed, I have yet to find clothes my size in San Jose. What I hate is when you get to your seat and someone has already put the bags over your seat. I just take it down, set it on a empty seat and put mine in its place.

I strongly disagree with Western. I never take on a huge bag, but with my back, I really want to drag my roll-around office (much smaller than a typical roll-aboard suitcase) instead of winding up in traction. I have a roll-around backpack that is again much smaller than what most people feel entitled to bring on and find it works well too. Wheels aren't the problem, size is.
