Jaco beach itself is a sh!# hole no question. People who go in the water get skin problems. Locals NEVER go in the water. The town itself is kind of a cool hippy beah town and the Beatle bar use to be a throw back beach shack. Its been "renovated" in the last couple of years and has lost a lot of its charm. It still has girls that are equal or better than the HDR. There are beaches you can reach in an hour or so that are amoung the best in CR but no Jaco beach itself is a dump. |

Jaco is recommended only by it's proximity to San Jose. But, sh#t flows downhill and empties into the sea at Jaco. Try the northern beaches of Guanacaste, or other parts of CR. But NOT Jaco. |

Keep in mind opinions make the world go round! ![]() Some people, like myself, love Jaco and all it's charms. It's a fun tourist party beach town with casinos. I find it waaaay more fun than Las Vegas. I agree the beach is not appealing, but just down the road is Playa Hermosa with some really great surfing. The Beatle Bar is something to be experienced. ![]() I'd make it a first stop as you go down the coast, assuming you're a surfer or into the amazing beaches. Personally, I wouldn't go to CR just to monger. It's a beautiful paradise to be explored and experienced. But every one of my planned trips will include Jaco. |

Yeah Good, it's got it's problems but it ain't as bad as exagerated. Mostly the dark socks and shorts kinda beach folks that stay in a 5 block radius of the DR every minute diss it so much... ![]() |

Seriously, I don't know why people dump on Jaco. Really, is San Jose any better at all?? Beyond SL and DR, no one else reports on anything, except the dangerous surrounding areas. That's better than Jaco why? Jaco is a party beach town. Lots of options. Really fun. The Beatle Bar is a trip. That sounds more enjoyable than sitting at a sports bar uncomfortable about leaving the premises. Just sayin', show Jaco the love! ![]() |

My (doubtless specious) advice--make the trip to Jaco once and decide for yourself. Love it hate it, you won't be indifferent to it. Then on another trip, go to some other non-Monger beach town (say, Quepos or a northern Guanecaste beach) for a comparison. For what it's worth, I enjoy Jaco...but what does that really mean to you, you know? |

BJ316, I have recently been all over the central and northern part of CR for the second time. If I were you I would get a rental from San Jose and drive to the ferry in Puntarenas to Tambor and drive to Malpais. Stay there and surf for a few days (rental an ATV) and have a great time then head north and hit as many beaches as you can. If you like surf you will find it. Please realize that I was there at a different time of year also (mid May) and it was great. The surf will be good from there to Timarindo in the north but again I don't know this time, just when i was there. If it's the same you will have a great time. Bring a girl if you that is part of your plans. I did and had the best of times. I wish you the best and GOD speed mi amigo ![]() HR_Juan... |

Just got back from 5 days in Jaco. Had not been there in 3 years. Stayed a block off the beach in a beautiful new 2 bedroom condo for 100 a night. Food good alot of K*ds not as many girls as SJ but nice looking. Loved it. |
