I will be going to SJO in June and this will be my first ever stay at La Amistad. based on the staff reviews I'm looking forward to my stay there and hope to enjoy it as much as my stays in my usual haunts.

I understand that all of the rooms are different and have different layouts. I have reserved a king room there and am wondering if based on the experiences of my CRT brothers whether I should request a specific room or not.(Matt, if you read this feel free to recommend one for me. I'll even buy you beer. lol) I'm also wondering whether the bar is now open and if some of the chica traffic is also there now.

Thanks all!

Would recommend calling for the specific rates.

My Favorite rooms, in no particular order are of course the penthouses...
201, 202, 203, 310, 311, 312. I believe the price ranges from $99 to $139 for these rooms. I believe they all have jacuzzi's except (310, 311 ?), among other amenities. 311 has a full kitchen.

They also have many other rooms with King beds, including 210 an 211, also favorites of mine. (can you tell I have spent some time there)

They have also remodeled their two kitchenette rooms to include jacuzzi's and King beds, I believe those are 106 and 212 ??

Call and confirm, they speak english, except for the Late night guy.

Agree with EL S. Any of those penthouses will do. My preferences will be by order 202, 201, 312, 203, 310, 311.

thanks, but I didn't reserve a penthouse or a studio apt. I reserved a regular room, king bed.

Any preferences on those?

I'm gathering 210 and 211 are king rooms, from El Silenciosos's reply. Are there many of these rooms, and are there ones to avoid? Failing anything else, is there a preference between 210 and 211?

thanks again.

You are really better off calling down there and asking what room they have you in, rather than asking here about the room. Better than going back and forth like this...

Find out room you are in and I can comment more accurately, as I have stayed in 80% of the rooms there...

Their number is 1-866-468-8684, ask for Matt, Rudy or Carlos anytime during normal business hours. Late night guy does speak much english...

El Silencioso, I plan to do just that, but I'd like to be able to say "No, not that room, put me in this room if it's available" or "that will be fine"

I only want to have to call down once, and I am more likely to trust your reviews than I am their recommendations or reassurances, since we all know how these can go at times and in various places in CR, and for me the Amistad is an unknown quantity, although the staff sounds great.

I'm going to be in this room for 9 days, so I'd like to start off on the best possible footing from the outset. Just like to have some opinions or observations because from what I hear every room is different.

OK, my favorite King Rooms, I think this is right. Normal Price for 210 and 211 is $79 a night with a 15% CRT discount for 1-6 days. 7 days plus is 25% discount. So you are looking at roughly $60 - $ 67 per night..

I would HIGHLY recommend those two rooms as well as the penthouses mentioned above... Other King rooms are above average rooms, but those would be my 1st choices.

307 is a king room on the third floor with a window overlooking the entrance area.

Hiker Tom, I wrote down this morning and was informed that #307 was the one I'm booked into, and the only one available. Can you tell me your experiences in that one?

I haven't stayed in it recently, been saving money by switching to queen rooms. I do recall the bathroom as being large but rather empty, there were plans to put in a jacuzzi (yup, plenty of room for one), I don't know the status of that. There also wasn't a large dresser, maybe that has changed as well. Also, since it's on the side of the hotel closest to the railroad crossing, you hear the train pretty well. :D

from my last message from Amistad looks like I will be in 301 anyway.

Does anybody know when the bar is scheduled to open? I asked the hotel and all they said was "soon". Has anyone talked to anyone on the ground with a better idea of what "soon" means? Yes, I know this is CR we're talking about.

Yes, I know that. lol

Actually, I guess what I mean is are they waiting for a permit (I'll set my alarm for 2015) or is it just the slowness of the work (I'll set my alarm for 2010)

We all know that "soon" means sometime after today, time frame yet undefined. I wondered whether we were looking at weeks, months or decades. :D
