Post subject:  Room 203 at the Amistad

I know there's a lot of love for the Amistad on this board, but the room I got wasn't what I was expecting.

I called and booked a penthouse for $119/night. Here's what the website says about this room category:

"We have 6 penthouses, all unique in design and size, newly renovated featuring King beds with memory foam mattresses, mini refrigerator, electronic safe, free local calls, HBO, Cinemax, air conditioning. Rooms include a two person 28 jet jacuzzi, personal dry sauna, bar and balcony. Family room with sofa and 40" flat screen television and seperate 30" in the bedroom."

Well, the room I got (#203) had no bar, no balcony, and no family room! It was a single room. No sofa, no 40" flat screen. It had a window, which looked out onto...a stairway. I could hear every single person walking up and down the stairway all day and night. Not the kind of banging I wanted!

UPDATE: I spoke with Matt, the owner, and he's made things right. Many thanks! His advice is to call ahead: since each room is different, he said he can describe each room and make sure the room you get has what you need.

Did you voice your displeasure to the owner while you were there? If so, was there any resolution offered?

I'm not familiar with all the new rooms in La Amistad, but your description of the unit does not sound like penthouse accommodations to me. What did the hotel charge you for the room...$119? I would have a chat with Matt, the owner...or send him a PM on this board.

Yeah sounds odd to me. If I booked a room that said it had something, and I checked in and it was THAT far off, and for THAT price, I wouldnt be long getting to the bottom of things.

I think Matt needs to re-write the descriptions of the penthouses as I believe only 1 (maybe 2) have balconies.

Some of the penthouses like 201, 202, 310 and 311 have large screen TV's both in the living area and bedroom areas ..

I believe ALL of the penthouses including 203 have a private 28 jet jacuzzi as well as a private sauna.. Not sure where else in SJ you can find a room like that for the money other than here and SL.

I stayed in Room 203 over my birthday weekend in Febryary and I found it be an Awesome room, It does not a couch but has 2 comfortable chairs and a small cocktail table instead. I found the TV to be quite adewuate, and did not experience the noise problems described above... but I do not spend a lot of time in my room, other than to sleep and

I agree Matt needs to rework the descriptions of the rooms on the web site, but I don't think this poster ever approached Matt about his disappointment or I am quite SURE this would have been addressed immediately and he most likely would have been resulted in an offer of an upgrade or an future nights stay in the nicer penthouses either gratis or at the normal rate of the penthouses you stayed in. (above penthouses mentioned above I believe are a step up in price)

Having a good pair of earplugs in your suitcase no matter where you travel is a good idea.

I wasn't impressed with 203 either. The room seemed small, the bath was almost as big as the room. Room 202 is awsome with lots of windows and light. Room 203 felt like a cave to me.

Fender,

Did you say anything to the man / woman at the front desk ? Did you let them know that you were not pleased ? Did you ask them to see if they mistakenly put you in the wrong room ? Did you ask to speak to the manager and / or owner ?

Upon entering your room, and realizing that it was not a penthouse - EXACTLY what did you do ? Did you just stay there the entire trip without saying anything? And did they charge you the full price per night ?

Sorry that you had a less-than-pleasureable stay there. But IMO - I'm pretty sure that if you talk to Matt the owner (CRT member Mkink) he will make things right. He's a real good guy, and runs a nice hotel. And I know he will resolve this for you.

Complete and utter rip. I'm not going back.

Sorry you did not like the room. It is the smallest of our penthouses. At $119 per night pre discount i would hardly call it a ripoff as it does have a dry sauna and 24 jet jacuzzi. if you would have said something i would have gladly moved you to another room that meets your needs or at least worked something out with you. We did have other rooms available during your stay. I sent you a pm to call me. For future reference to all CRT members when you have a problem and bring it to our attention we try to correct it as quickly as possible. Sorry you didnt have the experience that we pride ourselves on.

We discribe our penthouse on Amenities as well as size. We can call it another name but because all rooms are individual and unique in the hotel it is easier to call it a penthouse. For a weekly stay the Room is $89 per night for daily it is $101 with crt discount (taxes not included). It has a 24 jet 2 person jacuzzi, dry sauna and King Bed. I personally dont think the room is overpriced after comparing rooms at other hotels in the same location. I will try to clarify the rooms more in the future. As I stated earlier, If you have a problem in the hotel we are always open and willing to help correct the situation.

Every room is different there so you have to look at the room first and just say no to it I will take another or the deluxe....or know the one you are staying at by recommendation or prior experience. regardless if you voiced your opinion of the less than advertised room the management would try to change rooms or accommodate you in some other way.
Thats why its a nice hotel they try to work with you if something is not up to your expectations. IMHO the penthouses are a good deal and the deluxes are a little small and about 10-20 dollars overpriced at 69 dollars a night for how small some of them are and the busted economy and swine flu and rainy season(these factors all combined have got to yield a price break at some point). But the overall cleanliness and good service and safety make up for the little things. If I'm in CR a week I will stay there because the discount, but if Im only there for 3-5 days then I stay at Clarion which is 55 dollars for a bigger room and 65 for the junior suite. And if your pay cash there is no 20% tax added on top which adds up fast. So you end up saving almost 30-40% with the tax savings.... 14 dollars in price difference and 13 dollars in tax savings so 27 bucks cheaper....times five thats 130 dollars savings.
But bottom line the Amistad is a very very good hotel for San Jose. The value you get depends on the room your get.

if you had a lame experience

dont you think that it would have been better for you to at least give mat the opportunity to make it right.. i mean.. he is a sponsor

and ass all sponsors dont you think because they do support our brothers.. that they should be allowed to make it right instead of just blurting out the negative experience

am I off base with this??

I agree with you, Danielson. I have a real hard time showing any sympathy for someone who accepted services without comment in person, then jumped on the internet with multiple complaints. Are these the same guys who accept crappy service from women, never asserting themselves just being used, then trash the woman on the internet? Maybe an assertiveness class?????

Mkink, room 203 is a very nice room ,I only meant to compare it with 202.To call it a rip off is absurd.
