Hi, Is the departure tax still $26; It was last year - don't know, if it got changed. Last year I had problems, because they did not accept my 1$ bill ( was not in perfect condition!!). Duessel69 |

It's still $26 cash (dollars or equivalent in colones). If you pay by credit card, they treat it as a cash advance. Your bank will tack on $10. |

They will not accept bills that are torn or have big marks on them. |

I know this has been stated before but please refresh my memory -- how can I pay the departure tax before day of departure? |

Many (not all) branches of BCR (Banco de Costa Rica) sell them. The Banco Nacional also sells it. The BCR branch inside the INS building (Barrio Amon near SL) sells it, but the wait was usually long every time I went. |

Go to the bank (INS) just downhill from Castillo and buy it there. |

I can see how paying the tax in advance is a plus I walk by that bank all the time with not much to do go in pay tax no rush no problemo I like to shave my airport time Not having to do the tax at the airport means a few more minutes in the room jeje |

paying the departure tax takes, what 3 min? going into a bank in CR takes 25 min... WHY would you pay it anywhere but the airport, and risk loosing it? Anyway, don't pay it in dollars, pay it in colones, it's cheaper... last trip I spent about 23 on it in colones... |

Do not know what bank you use but I have never spent 25 minutes at the bank buying my departure tax. Why buy it at the bank? For me I like the ability to fill out the form at my leisure and comfortably at my casa rather than leaning on the shoulder of a fellow traveler while in the check in line. Naturally YMMV |

Naturally YMMV no, not getting it, I mean just waiting in line to get to the teller... Yeah, sometimes I just walk in and I'm done, but shit, sometimes it takes forever... Of course, if you're going to go and change your $, then you might as well get the departure tax... OF COURSE, I tend to loose shit, so I wait until I get to the airport... As to filling it out at the airport... well, hell, it takes about 45 seconds to fill it out, at least for me, so who cares??? |
