Wingman and I are in the process of booking rooms for our annual January trip and we are quite surprised by room rates. El Presidente has always been home base but the loss of the CRT VIP discount combined with what appears to be a large general rate increase got us looking around.

My initial research has me floored at the cost for a 3-4 star standard room in Central San Jose. Has the El Presidente CRT discount had me out of touch with the 'real' hotel rates in Central SJ all these years or have hotel rates significantly spiked up across the board?

If anyone has a suggestion for a nice, friendly, comfortable hotel within easy walking distance of the gulch hot spots, I'd like to know it. Sportsmen's Lodge is terrific, absolutely terrific, but we tend to like to stay someplace that is more low key and not ground zero for mongering (which, obviously, also knocks out the Del Rey, Clarion, etc.).

Any and all assistance appreciated. I was thinking that I could get nice accomodations in the $75-$85 per room per night range.

Try the Amistad which is all remodeled and lower key but just a block away from the Sportsmens Lodge. The Hotel Castillo is also another option.
