Hello fellow mongers. Found this site recently and have been reading the many informative posts in preparation for my upcoming "virgin" trip to Costa Rica :D . With a month of time to spare, I am planning to split it between Costa Rica and Dominican Republic...you know, so I can spread the love  . However, I have found it to be quite challenging to find an airline offering flights from SJO to Puerto Plata, DR. Sure there are many flights to San Domingo but I would really like the convenience of landing in Puerto Plata and taking a 20 minute taxis ride to Sosua, drop off my luggage at the hotel and head straight for the "actions". It will be my first time in either country and any help would be appreciated.

GR made that trip but flew into Santa Domingo then took the bus to POP (4-5 hrs.) I think PR made the trip also but not sure of his route or if they both went through MIA,(on American) maybe one of them will chime in.
Hell I can't even find a decent itinerary to POP from ATL anymore :?

 Not sure about that Spanky, it might be a sign to stay home and save $.

AA can get you there and it looks like it costs half as much if you just book it as 2 separate trips, SJO-MIA (218.00 depending on the date) then MIA-POP (360.00) http://matrix.itasoftware.com

OK.......I guess now is the time to make my first post !!! Longtime reader/lurker and your question is exactly
what I have researched for the last 2 weeks. I am heading to Sosua, Dec 2nd thru to the 5th and then on to the Gulch for more fun and frolic from the 6th to the 14th.

I can confirm that there are no direct flights between Puerto Plata(POP) and sSan Jose(SJO). The only option is the the SantoDomingo airport (SDQ) but then its a 5 hour bus ride into Sosua. My itinery will take me on American Airlines from Puerto Plata thru Miami(MIA) and then leaving Ft.Lauderdale(FLL) on Spirit arriving in San Jose at 12:40.

The beauty of this is the American flight leaves Puerto Plata at 5:45 in the afternoon, so plenty of time for a few sessionsat La Passion or even time to hit the beach or both. Thats what I like .....uninterupted mongering...Pura Vida

My cost for these 2 flights was approx. 450 Canadian or these days about 365 US !!

Originally I was only going to the Gulch for trip number 7 but after having completed trip number 2 to Sosua in October, I decided to add a few days and go back. I like both locations but they are totally different and it is nice having the beach only a mere 3 minute walk from the hotel in Sosua. Hope this helps !

Sucks to hear this Hans Onrbut... It looks like the only options is to either 1) fly from SJO to POP and gut out the 5 hour bus trip or 2) fly back to the states and buy a separate ticket for POP. Neither one is looking good right now but if I had to choose one, i think im gonna have to go with option 1 just because it is less of a hassle and saves me time. Good thing is I still have plenty of time to work things out.

Asia is a must do in my books...just not right now. Ever since my trip to Brazil I've been hooked on latinos like crackheads on crack.

Are there internal DR flights from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata, so you can avoid the bus trip? Seems like that would be the way to go.

There are no internal flights like CR. It would be great if there was a Nature Air or Sansa Air setup. The only options are the 2 bus companies
Caribe Tours or Metro bus Co. or a taxi cab which is faster but more expensive unless you were a bunch in a taxi van sharing the cost.
