Vistalinda Apts
I was there from 1/15to 1/29/08. cost $150 @ Week. Had a nice kitchen <think mobile house> or small gallery kitchen, stove, refer, and table with 3 chairs around it, then a small bedroom with a full size bed. Shower with electric hot water from the showerhead.
Small desk in area by the table.
Sitting room with 4-5 rockers for people to sit and chat with. Also a reading area with books and two leatherette chairs and one leatherette sofa. Paperbacks and tico times supplied.
Twice a week maid service and had to go down to laundry room to get extra towels.
Bus stop is ½ block from the hotel and in daytime no problem. I am not a late person or a drinker so I do not know about the area at night Okay in the daytime, bus was130 colonies and dropped you off at supermecado downtown. Pickup was same place as dropoff. Taxis to downtown were 1500 colones. Also there was a hipermas that was a 1000 colones taxi ride to and from.
Guard at night from 6pm to morning and all gated and locked up tight. Did hear firecrackers going off in the 7-9pm times but no gunshots that I heard.
There are 7-10 permanent apartments and the guys that stay there are helpful with info.
There is a magnificent view of the mountains from selected areas and there is a vacant lot adjacent to the apartments that some of the locals use for walks and K*D stuff.. firecrackers.
At this price seemed like a nice option and carlos was there if you needed anything.
Would take a spatula and some cups with me next time as implements in the kitchen were sparse. Had a microwave also and coffeemaker.
Also there was a safe. Not all rooms have a kitchen so you might want to ask when you make the reservation.

just my 2 colones worth.

Thanks for the report! I'll be staying at the Vista Linda Feb 29 thru March 6. I was wondering if you ever had a problem with getting a cab from there at night to go to the gultch? Also do cabbies know where the Vista Linda is from the airport? I can find the Calle Blancos area on a map but not the street wheres its located. Thanks in advance and t5hanks again for your report!

I have stayed there many times. Carlos has 3 computers in the lobby for all to use. This is not a 5 star resort and everything is very basic but is all one needs. One in a while there may be a woman or a couple there but basically it is all gringos living there for the same reasons we all go there for. The cabs at night from the DR will know where it is but from the airport they will not. Have directions ready in spanish or at least the phone num so the cabbie can call carlos if he is there but he is often gone. Its locked up tight always and hopefully somebody is sitting in the lobby to let you in upon arrival , usually there is. The neighborhood is low classed and I have never had any problems but would not walk around much past dark but many times have walked to several of the resturants nearby at night. I also have taken the bus at night many times without problems but know of one instance where a gringo, one of us, was robbed at the bus stop several years ago. PM me if you need mas information, and I will probably be staying there for jan and feb. JD

Yes, there is a small room with 2 computers, just off the sitting area. Vista Linda was my place to stay for many trips to CR; until I got a house. Carlos is a good host and smart businessman. VL IS an excellant choice for those who are budget conscious or stay for extended periods of time. VL is monger friendly, yet also accomidates everyone from posie sniffers(environmental types) to students and even foriegn embassy workers.

I stayed there a couple of years ago and it was ok. The suicide shower,
ancient bed linen's and furniture, having to shop for groceries and prepare my own meals, was not to my liking. It's to far away from the action and the conveniences I like. If you need a taxi and it happens to be raining you're going to be waiting a long time. Having said that, the common area was great for socializing and the guys that were staying there were cool as hell. If I wanted a similar ambiance with all the necessities I like I would pony up the extra dough and stay at Sportsmans' Lodge.

When I was there, some people used Skype in their rooms through the wireless. I watched some Youtube videos at the terminals. So, yes it's fairly fast DSL.

I thought VL was great for the money. Carlos is good guy and makes it a good choice on any budget. I do wish it was in a bit closer to the Gultch. But catching a bus or taxi was pretty easy. It's about a 90% monger poulation who are very helpful in showing rookies the ropes. Really good for long term visits.
