Dear Phoenix Rising,

Our OnePass® members are important to us, so we are making every effort to keep you informed of some changes to our checked baggage policy and the OnePass program.

Effective Oct. 7, 2008, customers will be charged $15 for their first checked bag when traveling on tickets purchased on or after Sept. 5, 2008, within the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.

The service fee will not apply to EliteAccess® customers, including those seated in First or BusinessFirst®, OnePass Elite and SkyTeam® Elite members, customers traveling on full-fare economy (Y) class tickets, or military personnel and their families traveling on official orders.

Effective for travel on or after Jan. 1, 2009, OnePass members will earn the actual miles flown rather than a minimum of 500 miles per flight for tickets purchased on or after Nov. 15, 2008. This affects base miles and Elite Qualifying Miles on flights operated by Continental* and most OnePass airline partners**.

Also effective for reward travel booked on or after Jan.1, 2009, reward travel mileage requirements will increase for customers traveling between North America and Tel Aviv (TLV) and between Hawaii and Tel Aviv.

Effective for travel on or after March 1, 2009, Elite Mileage Bonuses will decrease for Platinum members from 125% to 100% and for Silver members from 50% to 25% for tickets purchased on or after Nov. 15, 2008. Gold members will continue to earn 100% mileage bonuses.

It seems I keep missing Elite status since I usually travel in the begginning and end of the years. But regardless, the extra baggage fee is 25 bucks. That bumps up the travel cost 50 bucks. But with rising fuel costs, what do you expect???

The first bag policy does not apply to international travel.
The second bag policy does apply to San Jose and most of the Americas (not Brazil).

OnePass Elite members
SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members
Any customer traveling on full fare economy class (Y) tickets

Have done it many times. Sometime you have to ask them for the copa flights though. Otherwise they try to send you on all continental.

I know you can't book Copa flights online...so are you saying I need to call One Pass and book free travel the old fashioned way? Or can I call COPA and book through them?

You can book online. Just search for reward travel on continental.com and any Copa flights should come up...maybe you were trying copa's website? I just checked to verify and it worked.

I always try to deal with Continental even when all flights are on Copa. If you do need to call Copa, call their US number (800) 359-2672. Even if you're in Panama, call the US number. They are way more helpful. I've been told that the US number forwards to the Panama call center so I can't explain this phenomenon but I've had the Panama number tell me that there was no way for them to do something and then I call the US number and they say OK, no problem.

I was at the Continental counter today and the lady told me that it is just a matter of time until they will institute a $15 first bag fee and $25 second bag fee on flights from the US to Costa Rica.

I just bought a $100 pilot's sized carry on bag with wheels. It will save me time and a future fortune in checked bag fees. At Castillo, I paid about $9 for a weeks worth of ironed laundry, but the convenience was great. To add insult to injury, I traveled on frequent flyer miles and paid $30.70 rt.

I've been generally unconcerned about CO's baggage fees. I've made 13 trips to CR since my first a couple of years ago. By and large, I get the better deals from CO, so I decided to make them my primary carrier. That decision has paid dividends. Last September I gained elite status through 2008, which has allowed me to forego baggage fees, earn 50% more miles each trip, get upgraded to first class almost every leg of every trip, and use the President's Club lounge if I have a long layover. I gained elite status for 2009 a few weeks ago. :D

For those of you who are able to get cheaper travel using multiple airlines, I can understand why you would follow the money rather than stick with one airline. But for me, with fares averaging $600-750 dollars, sticking with one carrier has its advantages.
