Usually, the HDR is a dog pound. As has been said ad nauseum, yes, you can find the 7's, 8's and 9's. But the reality is that most of the population of the HDR is in the 3-6 range. When I'm short on time and need to find some acceptable entertainment quickly, the HDR is the last place on my list that I would try. You might walk in and find a gold mine or, usually, find a kennel. Just my opinion. Having said all of that, if I lived there, I would probably spend plenty of time there. I could wait for the acceptable companion to come along. I would sit there, sip my $3 beer and be content.

Yes, over half of the HDR's female population is well below my "doable" level. But to me, that does not make it a "dog pound" or a "kennel". For example, I was there last Saturday night at about 10:00pm. There were over 100 women and on my first lap, I counted 8 in the "9+" range and another 10 in the "8" range. That is 18 very doable girls amongst 90+ less desirable candidates. If someone can show me somewhere else in SJO with that number of women of that caliber, please, do so.

Just because there are many very doable girls in the Del Rey does not necessarily mean that you will get one or even see more than half of them. If you are so inclined, here are some ways to maximize your selection and minimize contact with the less desirables:

- Go at the right time. "Prime time" for me is from 10:30pm until about 12:30am. By that time, the girls are pretty much there. By 12"30am they are pretty much gone.

- Stay loose and flexible. When "the one" walks by, you want to be able to make a move then, not after you pay your bar tab and wait for your change. The best aren't around for long.

- Move. Stationary mongers draw "flies". Suddenly, Miss "3" has plopped down at your table and invited herself to ask her list of questions. Don't let her. Just like a video game, if you stand still you die. Move through the HDR/KL, pausing at places that give you the best view of the action. Catch them while they are arriving not after they are already talking to some other guy.

- Limit the alcohol. Booze does nothing to improve judgment. If you need a few to get "in the mood" it is better to drink them elsewhere before arriving at the HDR. It can be a lot cheaper and allows your mind to clear rather than cloud as the evening progresses. Besides, if you are not drinking booze, girls are much less likely to try to hit you up for a drink.

No, the Hotel Del Rey is not perfect, it is just the best option CR has, in my opinion. Good luck and good hunting!

I can agree with most of this. Everybodys standards are a bit different. I like the girl next door look. A little shorter and chunkier works for me too. So I probably see more 7,8,9,10 types in Del Rey than Pacifica does.It really is one of the best freelancer bars in the world. I have been to many of them in Europe and Asia, and Del Rey beats them all.

JMac, as you can see, he didn't say Best, he said one of the best, and I think the key word is "freelancer".

Instead of questioning his choice how about adding your list of better freelancer bars, I'm sure you can come up with a decent one.

Pac, I agree with you, but sometimes I just like to sit at the bar and watch the action for a couple of hours, even if it means having to fend off the second stringers.

The thing I really miss is not being able to smoke a cigar there while people watching.

Adelitas(TJ),Club Riviera(Barcelona),Help(Rio),LA cafe(Manila),La Dolce Vita(Cartagena) and Tequila Rock(Lima) all come to mind. Any others? The Hotel Del Rey is the reason i go to Costa Rica often.(won't ever get tired of that place)

Sorry, I initially thought it said the best. I stand corrected.
I like DrForm's list, but Id add
Neptune (Hong Kong), New Makati (Hong Kong ), Orchard Tower (Singapore), Beer-garden (Bangkok), Angels (Bangkok), Blok M (Indonesia)

Not that anything is wrong with the DR, but I dont consider it near the top. Of course this is just my opinion and Im simply adding some debate to the topic.

I just think the above listed places offer a much better venue, and experience.

I will agree with you on Blok M.Jakarta is my second home, and nothing makes me feel more at home than an evening trip to Blok M.Orchard tower is not bad either, but not as good a selection. Was not impressed with Bangkok freelancer scene.Never got around to mongering in HK.Adelitas and all the TJ bars are not a freelancer scene. So they cannot qualify.Bali has good freelancer action. But Del Rey is quite superior to all of them for variety (almost non existent in LOS) and atmosphere.

I was the poster Pac was referencing in the initial post. I still stand by my words. No where else in CR will you find the sheer number of women as in the HDR at about 10pm on a Saturday night. Per capita it has, IMHO, a very LOW percentage of upper line talent. By that I mean 7-9's. In comparing the usual population to to a place like Idem, Bar Idem, again IMHO, has a much higher per capita level of upper line talent.

The allure of the HDR is the sheer NUMBER of available women. Most are not very desirable, IMHO. But the search for the gem. The hunt for the Indie GFE is what we all are looking to find. The overt attention that we all receive as we walk the gauntlet. The "rock star" feeling as we are the hunted instead of the hunter. The fact that if I was staying there, I could walk downstairs any hour of the day or night and look for a bed mate. I wish I was there right this second. But, the HDR is a crap shoot. I made my comments because I am often pressed for time. Easier for me is an Idem or ZB or NF, Oasis etc.. If I had the time I would spend most of my vacation hanging in the HDR searching for the things I mentioned previously. But I still stand by my words, usually the pickins are slim.

I was at the del rey last friday night and have never seen the ratio higher in our favor. The only problem with this is the swarm is pretty intense. I have rarely ever hit the rey and not found something I could enjoy.
