I thought this would be a good topic to bring up.There are so many beaches in CR and I would like to know all your opinions of your favorite beach and experiences there.

I still enjoy Tamarindo even though there is so much construction. It's like an old California surfing town. It's a laid back town with the smell of ganja everywhere. There might be more ganja here than in Jamaica! I stayed at the Best Western and walked down to the beach every morning in high season January with very few people on the beach.

It has a great "dude" mentality.

Tamarindo still has a place in my heart because of the general laid back aire. But, they have nearly wreaked the place with construction, noise and of course pollution in the ocean.

The Carribean side though is quiet nice and lush in a tropical sense. It is actually more like the Carribean than real Carribean Islands before they were wreaked by the cruise ship influx.

Playa Carillo south of Samara . Totally undeveloped and protected by an off shore reef.

The mal pais- santa theresa area has many beautiful beaches also.

I have read and listened to many discussions about beaches in CR. Never heard tamagringo even mentioned.

El Viego is dead-on about Caribbean beaches, esp. Puerto Viejo/Cahuita/Cocles but better get to it quickly; when that mongo Marina gets built, it'll be "there goes the neighborhood" time over there as well. There are still plenty of near-virgin Pacific beaches mainly 'cuz they're damned tough to get to. Got a spirit of adventure or a boat?

Playa Flamingo is my favorite. The beaches are not spectacular but the area is nice.

M.A. has to be in top 5, especially week days.

1. Manzanillo southeast of Puerto Viejo, walking along the beach across the river and then golden sands towards Punta Mona

2. Playa Manual Antonio inside the park on the east side of Cathedral Point. Great place to take the K*ds.

Haven´t been to Guanacaste or Nicoya so that could change.

my favourite beach is guanacaste...

hands down.

my favourite 1 day retreat from SJ, by plane is M.A. by car is puntarenas.

Limon sucks ass..

Tamarindo is not bad if you want to get illicit pharmaceuticals, it's easy and plentiful - i've seen busts in Jaco for it.

Tamarindo, as someone pointed out is FULL of gringos, which isn't a great thing.

I agree 100% withthe above. I made my 1st trip there this past December...stayed in Puerto Viejo and the beaches there are stunning. Jaco...Tamarindo etc are overcrowed with construction. One beach that I would also highly recommend if you're seeking peace and quiet but beauty would be Playa Ventanas which is south of Dominical.

I would pick Manuel Antonio. I had a great efficency on a hillside overlooking the ocean. A nice downhill walk to the beach and a tiring uphill walk back. Great seafood in nearby Quepos.

Bring a chica as I understand the mongering situation in Quepos is slim.

The beaches weren't crowded, the Manuel Antonio Park is a paradise. Humidity is high (it's a rainforest) make sure to book a room with A/C.

The ride is a bitch, I will fly next time.
