Beginning September 3, Continental Airlines will eliminate 43 routes from its three U.S. hubs. The carrier will withdraw completely from 15 airports, six of them international.

The airline will no longer fly to Denpasar, Bali; Oakland, Calif.; Cali, Colombia; Palm Springs, Calif.; Chattanooga; Reno; Cologne, Germany; Santiago, Dominican Republic; Green Bay, Wis.; Sarasota; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Tallahassee; Monclova, Mexico; Toledo and Montgomery, Ala.

From Houston, Continental will no longer fly to Hartford or Washington-Dulles. From Newark, Continental will eliminate service to Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Calif. and Tucson.

From Cleveland, the airline will end service to Austin, Birmingham, Charleston, Charleston WV, Cincinnati, Des Moines, Detroit, Greensboro NC, Lexington, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Norfolk, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Ottawa, San Antonio, San Diego, Savannah, Tulsa and D.C.

To further clarify, that's San Jose California, not Costa Rica. I copied their employee bulletin with the details in the other Continental route reduction thread.

They are going to cut the 3-4 trips a day back and forth from IAH to San Jose, CR to 2.

That's not so distressing, they've done that for awhile, adding and subtracting more flights based on demand. If demand goes up its, much easier to add a flight where you already have operations than to add a new route.

IMO not really a bad thing. Alot of the major airlines are spread out wayyy to far, performing some routes that werent even profitable.

Is it really that hard for people to drive 1-2 hours in the opposite direction to get to a major airport

I am just glad that I live 20 minutes from IAH.

Their route-cutting is very disappointing. I only fly Continental on my mongering trips as I'm a gold elite ff. I've had my eye on their flight to Cali for quite awhile, also that flight to Cologne, Germany so I could visit the sauna clubs of nw Germany.

One alternative would be to fly Delta from ATL to Bogota. From Bogota there are numerous flights to Cali, Medellin and Cartagena on Avianca (a SkyTeam member).

The only problem is there is only 1 flight each way ATL-BOG (5PM-8:45PM) and BOG-ATL (9:30AM-3:30PM).

Another choice would be flying direct to Cali from Miami on Avianca or American.

Continental already flies to Bogota from Houston, they're keeping that 1 I assume. I want to avoid doing 3 flight segments in 1 day. With Cont I can go to houston & then panama city & catch Copa to wherever I want in Columbia or houston, bogota then wherever. It's not easy & very time consuming, more flights = more chances of things going wrong.

JUst an update, since this was posted, Continental gave the goodbye to skyteam, not sure about United flights down there, but United I think flies Rio direct from DC... so you can use those if you are in the NE.
