Just heard on the radio that several airlines are toying with the idea of fares that take into consideration a person's weight.......Of course, the idea being fuel related; an overweight person requires more fuel to transport.

Its sounds fine they already charge (extra seats) for overweight people. I have seen/heard it happen to people.

Now the airlines will know when/who to charge and when not to charge

It makes sense. Maybe it gives the obese another reason to lose weight.
I dislike sitting next to large people on a plane because you almost have to sit on an angle to accomodate them and you end up with a sore back.

Hey, I think it is a great idea. Say $1.00 per pound per 1000 miles. The airlines will be profitable in no time and gringa heifers that need two seats and four inflight meals will have to pay the freight on all that ass or stay home!

Continental tried to put me in a middle seat between two bountiful bovines one time (I weigh 190lbs). I told the air waitress that I would sit there if she could get the armrests down (faaaaat chance). I ended up with a window seat and some poor little girl had to fly between the humongous heifers.

Both Nature Air and Sansa have a 250 lb maximum weight on their flights. If you weigh more than that, they will charge you for an additional seat. I saw them do this one time (last year). Some guys were checking in at the Sansa counter, and one of the guys was pushing 300 lbs. They charged him for the extra ticket, but he made them (along with everyone else that was waiting) very aware of the fact that he was not happy with this policy!

Both companies weigh each passenger at the check-in counter, as well as each piece of checked / carry-on luggage.

i weigh 300 lbs and natureair did not even blink when i got on their plane, i always try and sit by a lone seat so i don't bother you skinny people. by the way, my shoulders are very broad so even though i am losing weight the airline seats are just to narrow for a normal human. i also always take an aisle seat so as to hang into the aisle rather than bother the passenger next to me. women that are overweight seem to spread out and engulf the seat more than me but i bet they weigh less.... no system is fair, but i would not pay for an extra seat. first class would be cheaper.

Yea I'm with you Cariden. I am just under 300 and always get an aisle seat so I won't crowd people and I also have broad shoulders. I know I'm a big guy so I try to make do the best I can.

And you are right. At current prices, it would be cheaper to fly first class the by two coach tickets.

Philly newspapers run ads about fake airline Derrie-Air

PHILADELPHIA — Derrie-Air has been exposed.

Readers of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News opened their papers Friday to see ads for a new airline called Derrie-Air, which purportedly charges passengers by the pound.

But the new carrier will never get off the ground. It's a one-day advertising campaign about a fake airline by Philadelphia Media Holdings, the papers' owner, and Gyro ad agency.

In light blue banners throughout the papers — as well as on their website, Philly.com — Derrie-Air cheerily trumpets its policy: The more you weigh, the more you pay. The ads direct readers to the website www.flyderrie-air.com.

Philadelphia Media Holdings spokesman Jay Devine said the goal is to "demonstrate the power of our brands in generating awareness and generating traffic for our advertisers, and put a smile on people's faces."

The company will track traffic to the Derrie-Air site. Devine said there's already buzz about the campaign on online blogs.

Visitors to the airline site learn that Derrie-Air is the world's only carbon-neutral luxury airline, justifying its pay-by-the-pound policy by saying that it takes more fuel to move heavier objects. The carrier pledges to plant trees to offset every pound of carbon its planes release into the atmosphere.

Derrie-Air's sample rates range from $1.40 per pound to fly from Philadelphia to Chicago to $2.25 per pound to fly from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

But those who scroll to the bottom of the site find out the truth behind Derrie-Air.

A disclaimer labels the ad campaign "fictitious" and says it is designed "to test the results of advertising in our print and online products and to stimulate discussion on a timely environmental topic of interest to all citizens."

"In other words," it says, "smile, we're pulling your leg."

Yes, I agree. As much as I enjoy the low fares....I still feel bad for them. I just booked two SJO flights with USAIRWAYS.....June/July trip $430 TOTAL R/T. Jan/Feb trip $376 TOTAL R/T. How can they possibly be making anything at that, when it costs $90 to fill my car's gas tank? It's still a bargain no matter how you look at it. They're going to have to start making money somewhere. No business can keep operating in the red.
