Someone please explain something to me...

With more and more airlines now not serving meals or snacks, some not even serving drinks of any kind. What are flight attendants doing on planes now other than trying to look pretty (NOT !!!) :P Well at least American carriers. Taca still has the occassional hottie... But it looks like the days of flying Taca are over for me with their new policies....

It would seem american travelers would be much better off with 1 flight attendant for the whole damn plane, don't serve anything unless the flight is over 4-5 hrs, save a ton of money on terrible food and snacks, usless, unfriendly, unmotivated people (aka flight attendants) and pass on that savings to the consumer....

Nah, makes too much sense !! :?

You forget one thing preventing them from doing that, and I can guarantee you that they would, the airline unions. :D

Gentlemen,
I'm afraid you've overlooked something a bit more serious than "serving food and drinks". Flight Attendants are trained in many aspects of aircraft and personal safety. They are also responsible for crowd control and now terrorist alerts.

They may not be beauties but they do serve a purpose. I think of them sort of like having a hot secretary. What do you consider more important: Someone who looks good bending over when filing or can get the job done and keep your ass out of trouble?

The pay isn't much but the benefits are nice. But then if you spent all day and night flying for a living how much time would you really want to spend on a plane?

If the plane goes down I want these people taking charge because you know the place is going to be a cluster-fuck.

As for the food, I've never had a meal I couldn't eat. Some were better than others but nothing totally inedible.

Now $5 for a beer, that is something to bitch about. Fortunately Delta was giving the 1st drink free on the flights to SJO and back this weekend. Don't know if that is always the policy but I like it.

The FAA mandates the ratio of flight attendants to seats on the aircraft. FA's are responsible for the safety of passengers during an emergency. The days of being young and beautiful are long gone. Us older guys remember when "STEWARDESSES :D " had to get a ground job at 27 and there were strict height/weight ratios.

TACA may have changed their upgrade policy but the rest remains the best of any carrier serving Central America. Food on every flight even those of :55 minutes, free beer or alcohol, genuine friendly service. No US flag carrier comes close.

Beg to differ ID... Continental offers almost all of that... They don't offer food on EVERY flight, but they do if it's meal time...

Continental's upgrade policy is better too...

I'm switching to CO... Plus they fly me to Denver, and I can get into their President's club :)
