AA announced today that they are going to start charging $25.00 for a second checked bag. It applies only to domestic flights so travel to SJO is not effected :D

American Airlines said Monday that travelers who purchase domestic economy-class tickets on or after May 12 must pay $25 for a second checked bag.

The exceptions are: customers in American's AAdvantage program who have achieved AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Executive Platinum levels; passengers who have purchased full-fare tickets in the economy, business and first-class cabins; and travelers with international itineraries (except to and from Canada and U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

Customers may pay the fees at an airport self-service machine or at the curb-side check-in area with a credit card, the airline said. They can also pay the fee at the check-in counter with a credit card, check or cash.

The airline said the checked-baggage policy changes are due to the rising costs associated with the transportation of checked baggage, including the price of fuel.

The new policy also applies to travelers on American Eagle.

I received a similar email from United today saying they will also be charging $25 for the 2nd checked bag starting May 5th.

Interesting, I spoke with the general manager running the Taca counter in Chicago about this issue just about 2 weeks ago. Since they are a United partner I was curious to the status of this upcoming change.

To no ones surprise, they expect it is coming but are doing everything they can to avoid it. Being a private company and the so called UNITED of Latin America may help delay it for a while as their bread and butter are not US routes..

Now if they would just start enforcing the carry on rules they may have something to offset the ridiculously escalating prices... Can't tell you how many people board these Taca flights with multiple carry on bags..

This new baggage polict will rarely (if ever) be an issue for me as I find one bag at 50lb to be easy to stay under especially with a 20 inch carry on large enough to throw my laptop in once I get through security.

United started the second checked bag charge on February 4 followed byUSAir, Delta, NW and American. Nice of them to send you an email almost 3 months after the fact.

Here is the thread about United instituting the charge:
