I spent a month in Dec/Jan – yes a month – staying at the Hotel Freebird and in a room with shared-bathrooms.

After spending my 1st night in the deluxe suite I checked out the shared-bathroom area and decided to move in the room with shared-bathrooms. $30/night and the room was awesome and the bathrooms extremely clean and the showers (pressure and temperature) to die for.

Also, there is a computer in the common area with free high-speed Internet access and a pot of very good coffee in the morning – a good combination to wake up to. This also allows you to meet other people with common interests - this was important for me as I was travelling on my own.

There is a washer/dryer that you can use to do your own laundry but I asked Dennis (the owner) to allow the hotel maid to wash and iron my clothes – she did a huge load for only $5. I had to pay her $20 for the quality of ironing she did.

The hotel location is perfect – 2 blocks from the Del Rey, 2 blocks from El Presidente, 2 blocks from everywhere. I walked home from the Del Rey everynight at 2:00 AM – for a month – and I never had any issues. And just around the corner from the hotel is a Costa Rican 7-Eleven open 24/7 including Christmas eve and New Year’s.

Most importantly, Dennis was a tremendous host – extremely relaxed and a fun guy to hang out with. Loaned me his personal massage table to get massages in my room – Bernie who works at the Del Rey gives the best massages – no happy endings with Bernie though.

I had a deal with Dennis - I would ask him 5 hard questions every day about San Jose and he would have to find me the answers. There wasn't much he didn't already know and he was always very kind to phone his friends to find the information he didn't have. I would ask for example, is there a gym in the city? or what buses do I take to get to a golf course? or which girl gives the best BJ?

I had a great time in San Jose mainly because of my friendship with Dennis and with "New York" Bob, owner of Costa Rica Paradise Tours - by far the nicest guy in San Jose. If you ever decide to book any tours I definitely recommend Costa Rica Paradise Tours.

I had a great time and I haven’t even mentioned the girls yet.

or as they called me in SJ, GandiMan.
