To travel from San Jose to Puerto Viejo on the Southern Caribbean coast would cost you 4,020 colones or about $8. Only 630 colones or about US$1.28 to Puriscal, about US$3.93 to San Isidro and about $3 to Jaco...
A five hour bus trip from San Jose to Manuel Antonio where you can just sit back and comfortably watch the lush scenery go by for the equivalent of less than US$5 sounds like a bargain to me.
You should keep your eyes on your belongings when you ride any bus but you avoid the risks of driving yourself in a foreign country and in case nobody has told you, the Tico's may be wonderful people but they are definitely NOT good drivers (there's a reason that car rental insurance is so high) and you can enjoy a 'real' Costa Rican experience at a remarkably low price.
