Third Daily Flight To San José From Miami Next Month Offered by ATA Airlines
Inside Costa Rica

Next month visitors from the United States will have another alternative to fly directly to and from Costa Rica as another airline prepares for beginning of its regular service to San José from Miami. ATA Airlines, marketed through LatinSKY, will be offering directly daily flights from Miami to San José and Guatemala City on March 15. The cost of the ticket will be us$190 return, plus taxes.

ATA says the price of the ticket will all depend on the demand for the route and competition and will offer meals, music, videos and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, ATA is now in its 35th year, serving major business centers and popular vacation destinations through its scheduled service and commercial charter operations. ATA Airlines, Inc. is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Global Aero Logistics Inc., whose other indirect subsidiaries include North American Airlines, Inc. and World Airways, Inc.

ATA will be the third airline to offer direct flights to and from Miami, joining American Airlines and Taca. The daily flights are scheduled to leave the Juan Santamaría airport at 5:55pm, arriving in Miami at 10:00pm (local times). From Miami, ATA leaves at 3:50pm and arrives in San José at 4:40pm. (Miami is currently one hour behind Costa Rica time, two hours during daylight savings time). The airline will be using Boeing 737-800's with a capacity of 160 passengers - 12 in first class and 148 in economy.

In the last several months a number of airlines started regular flights to and from San José: the Colombian airline Avianca (January); Air Caraibes from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique (December); and Frontier Airlines (November). On deck is AeroRepublica from Colombia that has yet to define a start date.

ATA drops out  This will reduce the pressure on AA and TACA to keep fares low.

From todays Inside Costa Rica

ATA Cancels Costa Rica Low Fare Flights
ATA Airlines, Inc., formerly known as American Trans Air, a low-cost scheduled service and charter airline based in Indianapolis, Indiana, has decided to cancel it flights to Costa Rica even before taking off.

The airline had announced earlier this year that it would commence direct, low cost, flights to Costa Rica from the U.S. The first flight was to have been on March 15.

Now it seems the airline will be putting off its plans for the time being, leaving a number of passengers who had booked on the airline stranded. The airline has said it would offer full refund to all those who purchased tickets.

The airline also on March 6 announced the cancellation of flights from Chicago to Cancun and Guadalajara, Mexico, citing the high cost of fuel making the route "economically unfeasible to continue low-fare service".

The airline said that it would be better using its aircraft to the more profitable charter service business and U.S. military contracts.

Flights over the next few months on AA, while higher than last month, still within reason (under $300 before taxes). And I look at weekend/holiday flights exclusively. Spirit seems to have increased fares to SJO. AA from MIA to POP (Domincan Rep) $198 but then $125 additional in taxes and fees.
Then there's the bad: $600+ to MDE, you pick the airline, out of MIA. And forget about Rio. That's what the AA Advantage miles are for. :D

ATA closes operations, files Chapter 11

INDIANAPOLIS --
ATA Airlines canceled all flights Thursday after filing for bankruptcy as it posted advisories at ticket counters in the handful of cities it still served and sought help for stranded travelers.

The Indianapolis-based airline, once the nation's 10th-largest, entered bankruptcy for the second time in just over three years Wednesday, this time citing the loss of a key military charter business.

The airline had approximately 50 flights per day, mostly between Hawaii and four west coast cities - Oakland, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas, said company spokesman Michael Freitag.

ATA said has been in contact with other airlines that may be able to assist with travelers holding tickets that the airline can no longer honor.

On its Web site, the airline apologized for the disruption and suggested that customers seek alternative travel arrangements.

The company had over 2,200 employees, Freitag said.

"Virtually all of ATA's employees are being notified today that their positions are eliminated," Freitag said.

The carrier retrenched in 2006 after emerging from bankruptcy, focusing on destinations in the Southwest and an increase in military charter business. But like other airlines, it has struggled in a foundering economy and has been unable to offset soaring fuel prices.

Fuel is one of the industry's top costs and has pushed some carriers into merger talks.

Major airlines, to offset record fuel prices, have slashed amenities that were once free and added fees for second bags, traveling with pets and booking tickets by phone.

United Airlines said new luggage fees it has imposed on travelers will generate more than $100 million annually.

ATA came out of bankruptcy with several other carriers two years ago, and it became the second to declare bankruptcy in just the past two weeks, both with operations in Hawaii. Aloha Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, a little more than two years after emerging from bankruptcy.

ATA announced last month that it would leave Chicago's Midway Airport, which it had used as a hub since 1992.

The chief executive officer at ATA's parent company resigned two weeks ago. Subodh Karnik, who had been CEO at ATA, stepped down after heavy pressure from a major investment firm to turn the airline around.

Not mentioned in this thread is Spirit Air out of FLL. Admittedly, a through connection from many places might be tough but in the Northeast, ACY-FLL-SJO is the way to go.
