Puerto Viejo and points south?

Anyone have any first-hand recommendations for hotels for Puerto Viejo or the beaches south of there? It looks like Las Palmas may be a possibility, so I'd be particularly interested in the opinions of anyone who has been there? Are there other better options?

I'll be going with an amiga I've known for several years; so although I'd like a nice place, there is no need to impress her.

I'll probably be more into just chillin', but we'll still want to party some at night. So I'm looking for a place with a good balance of both options.

Stayed here a couple of times--laid back, walking distance to downtown, restaurants, on the beach, relatively inexpensive

Great idea...bringing a sweetie out there is the way to go.

I've stayed at CocoLoco Lodge...great place and reasonable prices...

Also stayed at Bar Maritza with great results...

Don't forget to go a little further down the coast to Manzanillo and have the seabass at Maxi's!

I once stayed with the former novia at a place called "Almonds and Corals" in Manzanillo. It's a pretty cool eco-hotel in the middle of the forest, where the rooms are actually large tents on platforms. Also have a jacuzzi and a large outdoor lounge/restaurant area. Just a fifty yard walk to some of the most pristine, uncrowded beaches you will see anywhere.

A bit pricey at something like $120/night all-inclusive (this was 1/06 - it may be more now), and the buffet-style food was mediocre at best, but still a unique place. And you will never forget the sound of those howler monkeys at 4am in the morning...

I have stayed in similar tent accomodations and they can be amazingly nice and evoke a great mood. But, if you get up at night to pee, shine a light on the floor in case a snake crawled in, also shake out your clothes and shoes in case a scorpion sought refuge there as well. No kidding.

I have reserved 3 days in June at Cashew Hill in PV. I have never been there but it is highly rated on Trip Advisor and the price is right. The prices quoted include the 16% tax

Most of the hotels in Puerto Viejo and points south are very rustic...few have A/C and many have shared washrooms/bathrooms. Las Palmas and Hotel Suerre are located in, or very close, to Punta Uva. I checked out the accommodations for a friend at these places a few years ago. The hotels are situated behind a jungle and on the beach. The rooms were comfortable (with A/C, TV, full bath, etc.), and the grounds are located along a beautiful beach, and include a swimming pool, open air dining and bar, tennis courts and a host of other typical resort amenities. I believe, the rooms were about $70 - $80 a night when I toured the hotels. I was surprised to find both hotels almost empty. These places are the closest thing to an all-inclusive resort in Talamanca.

At this point, it looks like we'll be staying at either Almonds and Corals or Las Palmas. I'll let everyone know my impressions when we return.

BYW, in addition to Maxi's, does anyone have any restaurant, bar and dancing recommendations?
