Quick question:

What are some of the hotels/apts that are nearby Dr. Chen's office?

Anyone know how far the SL and Vista Linda are from Dr. Chen's office?

Thanks again.

Not sure about the apartments but you can walk there from the SL but it is one long ass walk. Either way, cab ride is not more than 500 colones if I remember correctly.

Gator,

It sounds like you have scheduled some dental work with Dr. Chen and are looking for a hotel near his office. Don't worry about it.....the Sportsmen's Lodge, the Castillo, the Amistad, etc. are all no more than a 20 or 25 minute walk to Dr.Chen's office. If you don't like to walk, take a cab....a few dollars at most.

The Presidente is prabably the closest "chica friendly hotel" to Dr. Chen's office.....possibly a 10 minute walk from there.

Less than 4 blocks from Hotel Nuevo Johnson (Avenida 2 and Calle 8, about 10 blocks from Sudamer Apartments (Avenida 14, Callle 7), About a 2 mile walk from SL (not a bad walk, done it many times), less than 1000 colone taxi ride in each direction ($2)

I walked from the SL to Dr. Chen's daily for a week, on two different trips.

If your appointment is for early A.M. you can walk and check out the local talent along the way. At the Presidente go west for about 8 blocks to the Central Mercado, turn left and go south about 4-5 blocks on the left side of the street. Go to the door on the south side and push the buzzer.

Stop at the Central Mercado on the way back, same street north about 4-5 blocks.

It is no more than a twenty minute walk from the SL.

Dr. Chen is one of the most upbeat, and polite, men that I have ever met.

I have been using Dr. Chen for almost 5 years. He was recommended to me by other gringo residents. I believe I was the first to recommend him on CRT and I know of at least 15 guys have taken that recommendation and went to him for dental work.

I take it you have been using him for all these years to mean that his work is good. Has he done any root canals, I am going next Wendsday and I have pain, I was thinking of visiting him. I am pretty sure a root canal is going to be necessary.
One other question is that I am going for four days and I dont know how complicated a root canal is... Do I really want to f up my four days with this kind of work?

The Johnson is pretty close and dirt cheap but would be a bit too basic for most guys around here. Actually, right off the top of my head, I can think of several nicer hotels that are even closer. The Hotel Doral is only a block and a half away on the corner of Avenida 4 and Calle 8. The Royal Dutch is just 2 blocks away on the NE corner of Avenida 2 and Calle 4. And the New Park Hotel is located a block and a half away on Avenida 4 between Calle 2 y 4. The Park has been completely redone from the shithole it was before but it is still an extremely spartan place (I checked out the rooms but never stayed there). I've never seen the Royal Dutch but have heard good things about it from some guys. And the Doral is a pretty nice deal that I've stayed at on more than one occasion with rooms at $30/nt that are at least as nice as say the Morazon. With all that being said, if you're in SJ mainly for mongering you're probably better off staying at hotel that is closer to the night-time venues you plan to be spending your time. Even if you stay at the Sportsman's which is on the other side of the Gulch from Dr. Chen's its not THAT far or unpleasant a walk and at the time of day you'd be going perfectly safe. If a 10-15 minute morning stroll is too much exercise for you it is also a very cheap cab ride.
