Post subject:  Any tips or tricks to get an upgrade
I have read that some people have only paid a $35.00 fee to upgrade to 1st class. sHOULD A PERSON INQUIRE ABOUT THE UPGRADE WHILE AT A REGIONAL CARRIER OR AFTER WE ARRIVE IN SAY hOUSTON ON THE WAY DOWN.(ignore those caps please!) We will be on Continental. TIA

In my experience, CO protects their first class seats, such that you either have to pay the FC price, use points, or have "elite" status. Elite status will afford you an upgrade if FC seats are unsold. So to answer your question, there is no program with CO to upgrade paying a set "upgrade fee."

Basically the luck of the draw IMHO. I have flown with the same carrier 12 times consecutively now. Was upgraded on a regular basis prior to achieving Silver Status by being remembered and friendly...
