Post subject:  US Airways Connections

I'm thinking about taking US Airways on my next trip as the price is pretty good, $475. The problem is that I connect in Las Vegas with just a 29 minute layover and connect again in Pheonix with a 42 minute layover. Is that cutting it too short? How is it going through those airports? That price is just too good to pass up.

Never flown from those airports so I can't tell you. Most of my trips to CR are on US Air and I have never had an issue so I would risk it. Just check to see if there are other flights heading to CR if you miss your connection.

Cheers.

The last two times I have taken US Air to save money, I have had to stay over in Charlotte. They will never get my money again.

Might go without saying, but don't check bags if want to have any chance of making these connections. My last trip in December, Delta got off to a late start in DCA and eight of us had to run to make our connection to SJO. The plane was still at the gate, but they would not let anyone board. One excuse was that they would not let us travel without our lugggae which didn't make it on to the flight.

Good luck!!

Good to see that you are returning. Hope our dates coincide one of these trips.

I too am flying US Air next week to SJO and they have a few quirks. Let me make a suggestion that you didn't ask for. US Air can be bad when it comes to publishing all of their available routes. They kept trying to make me go through Charlotte instead of PHX, even though PHX was quicker and cheaper. The fact that you have to go through Las Vegas sucks, given the fact that there are at least 5 non stops daily between SJC and PHX. Doing a quick search or even call customer service and see if you can find such a flight. I just did a quick search on US Air and found a few "one stop" flights to SJO from SJC for $435 w/o tax.

Hey Ciao,

I'm looking at returning on 3/25 through 4/3. It would be great to hook up with you again. The cheapest 1 connection flight I could find on US Air was $627 tax included. What dates were you looking at? I'm currently thinking about a Mexicana flight for $516, still 2 stops but more of a buffer between flights.

Hard to believe 29 minutes would be a legal connection time, guess it is or they couldn't sell it(?) if you check bags forget it. I booked to SJO on Delta once with a 42 min. connection time in ATL without realizing then got worried and called Delta, she said it was legal but changed my flight at no charge.

I don't recall what dates I checked, but I think it was around the time I was going in March (13-22), where I just barely miss you. Sorry Amigo.

I would definitely say it is too short of a connection, especially for an international flight. I've had prblems with America West with connections in Phoenix. America West is US Airways now.

I wouldnt be so concerned about YOU making the flight as much as I would my bags.

If its an actual published fare and not something you cropped up, then they will make sure you are on that flight. Whether it means holding the plane for a couple minutes, sending John with the cart to meet you and lug you over to the gate, or whatever. Once you are manifested into the flight, a whole bunch of red lights will go off on their end when they dont recieve your boarding pass from location #2 to location #3.

On the other hand, for a bag to make a turnaround that fast. I doubt it. Theyll likely end up somewhere else, and show up at SJO a day late.

But if its a scheduled connection, you are considered checked in for all legs of the flight at your origin.

Unless your flight is delayed considerably, they will be forced to hold the plane there.

Point being. Those connections are all realistic or else they cant publish them. It is technically their job to make sure everything between the origin and destination run smoothly, including you getting to all the points in between.

Well, I decided to sidestep the whole issue and book on Continental. It's actually a better deal as I only make one connection in Houston with a three hour layover. Gives me plenty o' time to eat and swill down a couple of frosties. Also, I'll get to SJ at about 8PM instead of 11PM. It was a bit more at $566 but well worth it.

I'm sure I'll see some of you crazies when I get there.
