Anyone have experience with Hotel Rex? They have a very minimal website. But the price is attractive and there's no info on location. :?:

Yeah, I posted this in another thread in this section:

The hotel is located immediately next door to Bar Limon on c. 1 near av. 7. It's two blocks W. and one block N. of the Holiday Inn Aurola.

Prices are higher than listed on the site, but not by much. They have eight suites ranging from $200.00/month (twin bed, no frills) to $350.00/month (king bed). All rooms feature private bath, phone, cable TV, hot water. All rooms have in-room safe boxes, and are secured by both a door lock and double-throw deadbolt. The owner Jim Marshall seems to be an okay guy.

I didn't inquire about whether or not the Rex is chica-friendly, but when Marshall replied to my inquiry, he gave me walking directions to the HDR.... He only rents rooms in two-week minimum blocks however and will not rent for only a few nights. This is more of a month-to-month apartment building. Prices do not include tax...because there isn't any (it's an apartment, not a "hotel" per se). :D

Thanks El C! I was curious about that place and I was going to force El S to scout the place for me when he is down there. Too bad it's a minimum of a two week stay.

Well as I said, it's more of a month-to-month apartment setup. Owner Jim Marshall states that many of his guests are repeaters, but from the sound of it you won't get much beyond a decent room/bath. It is conveniently located around 3 blocks from ZB, but is a long daytime stroll to the del Rey.

I think that like the Sudamer or Scotland Apartments it may be a good option for an extended stay. :)

Thanks for the information. Heres a copy of the email I recieved from Jim Marshall the manager:
I have a large room, private bath, cable, fan, security lock-box,
queen sized bed, downstairs, ( a brand new room ),
for $200 total for that period. Please let me know if you would be
interested as we are in the busy season now. I would not need a
deposit, if you would furnish the arrival time, Airline and flight
number , and your desire to stay. Thanks, Jim Marshall

I'm staying for seven days, so still a pretty decent price. I'm thinking about it. I wanted to stay at the Sudamer but Carlos won't commit until until two weeks before my arrival Feb. 29. I think thats cutting it too close for high season. I just want to be sure I can get a medium priced, secure room.

Too bad there's no mention as to if it's chica friendly, or not. :?

Thats a good question. But since its set up as an apartment as oppossed to a hotel, it might not be a factor. Maybe :?:

Well, as I wrote above, Jim and I never directly discussed the question of chica policy, but when he described the location of the place to me, HDR was one of the four landmarks he listed, along with Bar Limon, RACSA, and the Holiday in.

I get the idea that as long as you don't cause him trouble, chicas are welcome. Remember, he mainly rents to repeat tenants.

Hey guys, why not just send him an email and ask about his guest policy?

If that doesn't work you can also try emailing them and asking.

Well, I just got an email from Jim stating that the room I was going to get is now not available. Seems the person who was leaving the day I arrive decided to stay another month and no other rooms are available. Such is life. But I do have a confirmed reservation for the Vista Linda. Sounds like a reasonable place but given what people say about the neighborhood I'll be taking a lot of taxis. But thanks to everyone for their input on Hotel Rex.
