I heard that many flights are delayed out of SJ, My connect time in Houston is only 1 hours and its the last flight out of the day, Can I depend on on the flight to leave out on time, or should I try rescheduling to a earlier flight just in case

Wbpt12,

With a one hour connect time out of IAH, you may be moving like the OJ of old in a Hertz commercial. My experience with Customs there is 30 minutes minimum and then a probable switch of terminals.

Problem is, you can never be certain what time you will leave Costa Rica. IMO, unless you don't mind staying overnight at the Houston Howard Johnson, give yourself at least a couple of hours when returning through HOU.

The thing is, if you miss your connection, Continental will either book you on a different airline if possible, or put you up for the night (assuming it's their fault). Unless you have to be home "on time", it's not so bad a deal.

Otherwise, yeah, book an earlier flight.

wbpt12,

My first trip down I had an hour between flights we got in to Houston on time but customs was down to 3 agents and a fight ahead of me. Don't know where they were from but everyone of them got photoed and finger printed. So by the time I got thought my flight had left 15 min earlyer.

Ended up with a late flight out of Houston to Vegas then 6 hrs there till flight for Vancouver. No extra cost Cont, just rebooked me.

Booked a different flight the second trip with 3 hrs between flights and was ok. Had more agents on that time and made it through in 15mins.

I have done this flight twice. It seems that they hold the Houston flight to accommodate connections. It was stressful as I was running the entire time but I made it both times on time. Also both times the flight always seemed to leave late with us sitting on the plane and more people coming on. That is how I am certain they hold it.

I was never delayed out of SJO on any flight except USair. In 17 flights only one delay leaving.

Oh I also have had about 50 minutes in the connection.

I did not check bags either time but saw others from the SJO flight get on while they seemed to be holding it.

10 times I have returned from San Jose, CR thru Houston on Continental, always with approximately a 1hr. 15 min. connection time to my flight to Vegas & have always made the connection with time to spare.

It's been close a couple of times & maybe I'm just lucky but even when we've left CR 15-20 minutes late I've always made it.

SinCity,

Our situations are similar. In the past 18 months, I've flown CO, SJO-HOU nine times. Some of the connection times were 3 hours, some 120 minutes and some were 70 minutes. Both of the 70 minute flights ended up leaving late from San Jose, and arrived at HOU late enough so that the agent gave me vouchers to the Howard Johnson. That gesture told me that they had no plan to hold the frikking connecting flight for me. However, given my nimbleness and sprinting ability  , I was able to make both flights, just barely.

In summary, even though I have never failed to make my connection, I don't particularly care to risk it. Your tolerance for risk may vary.
