Vista Linda was my home when in CR for many visits. I still recommend it especially if you like to stretch your dollars or are here for an extended time. I now rent a home or it would still be my choice. The neighborhood is as safe as any other. It is reasonably close to the gulch either by bus or taxi.

I have stayed at Vista Linda numerous times and never had a problem. Carlos the owner has always been a great host and apartments are clean comfortable as well as very reasonabe. Area is typical middle class neighborhood. Anouther plus is apartments now have safes. It is hit or miss if taxis know the place best bet is to get a few business cards and carry with you to give taxi directions.rbc100

VL is a great place but is located in a bad barrio. Across the street is a pathway hangout for the worst sort of lowlifes in San Jose. It is common to see crackheads smoking crack right outside the gate. You have to be careful leaving in the daytime. I walk the neighborhood in the day but the corner 300 meters to the east is dicey.

It is not a typical middle class barrio. It is a bad barrio but not the worst in SJ. Gunshots are heard often at night.

The guard is armed and works from 6pm until 6am. He is right there when you exit the taxi at night. Take the bus in the day and taxi at night and you should not have a problem. Once inside it is very secure.

The guard knows how bad the barrio is , he will tell you to wait for the taxi inside the gate not outside. Ask the taxi drivers if the barrio is bad and they all say si senor muy peligroso.

The "on vacation" gringos are the only ones in SJ who think the barrio is good or middle class.

I think Zman has a personal issue going here. VL is a good alternative.

I do not have a personnal issue. Carlos is a great guy , and VL is a good place to stay in you take a few precautions.

It is not located in a good barrio and to say that puts a newby at risk.

Take a taxi at night, stay inside the gate until it arrives, and only bus by day.

I have stayed at VL and agree with Zman's opinion about the risk factor of the neighborhood at night.

Dongordo got mugged at gunpoint, on a Sunday evening at 8pm in April 2005, at a bus stop that is only 100 meters from VL.

Again you are correct, however....to be fair you must first prequalify with the statement that there are NO SAFE BARRIOS IN COSTA RICA.
