Post subject:  Hotel Riviera review by QBF

The hotel Riviera is about 5-10 min from SJO, in Alajuela. They have a shuttle to and from the airport, which is quite pleasant. I was unaware of this shuttle on the way there, and got scammed by a cab driver who charged me $18 to get there... I nearly freaked on him, and damned nearly beat him to a pulp for the suggestion... He backed down, and said that since he liked me he would only charge me $12!!!!!

Well, to avoid complications I paid that, and he had the gaul to offer me his card so that I could use him back to the airport... I kind of wish I had kept his card, if only to know the name of the SOB...

The front room of the hotel is quite attractive, and looks like a spanish hacienda. The staff were pleasant, and attentive.

This hotel had a relatively attractive garden and pool, which was FREEZING cold when we went, so, needless to say, we didn't partake.

There is a restaurant at the hotel, and the menu seemed quite nice, but it was packed, mostly with americans, and we wanted to be alone more than that, so we took a 10 min walk to a nice bar that served a truly awesome steak, and had a nice selection of food. It was recommended by the guy at the front desk, but I couldn't for the life of me remember it's name. I could find it again, no problem though...

(tangent - directions to the bar/restaurant)
To get to the restaurant: Walking out the hotel, walk downhill, past the school, until you go over the river. Make the first real right you can - there's a dilapidated ruined old building on the corner. Go about a block or two, and the bar is on the right hand side across the street. It has a nice open air terrace, and would be hard to miss. There is a gas station cattycorner (sp?) from it.

(back to the hotel review)
The bathroom in the hotel is quite nice, but the bed was uncomfortable.

Wireless was spotty, although they did have 2 signals. I was told that the spottiness of the signal was b/c we were pretty much the farthest away from the router we could be while still in the hotel, so I would hope the signal is better in other rooms.

The room had a large glass window overlooking the pool, and had a very pleasant atmosphere overall.

The room was 2 full beds, so they were quite small for my 6'4" frame...

The ride back to the airport in their shuttle was pleasant, and without incident.

The price of the hotel was quite good, I believe it was approximately $80 for the night, which, is great for a local airport hotel.

This is another place that I would consider staying in again for a short stay (arrive at night, leave in the morning) although I would suggest bringing your own chica...
