Post subject: | Late night travel from SJ to Jaco |
First timer here going to be in Cr for the week of the 17th thru 21st. I had a question about travel to Jaco. From all I have read here the best way to head to Jaco would be by taxi, should run me 75-100 based on negotiation. My flight lands at 9:50pm local time, any different advice about getting from SJ to Jaco at that time of night or anything i should be aware of at that time? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. b |

Buja- I would heed Hola's advice. The trip thru the mountains is dangerous enough in the daytime. I just ran across a new taxi driver, as my regular was busy, that drove us out to Jaco from the gulch for $60 last week. Good, experienced driver, decent Toyota taxi. Possibly cheaper from the airport? Julio Rivera cell 358-7554 Buena suerte |

As has been said, do NOT go late at night. The roads through the mountains are tricky and dangerous. At night, especially if you're not familiar with them (as most taxi drivers probably wouldn't be) you're just asking to go off the side of a mountain or get head-on'd by a sleepy truck driver, or end up in the middle of nowhere, with NOTHING open (gas stations aren't even open, which means the taxi driver won't even be able to round-trip). I know people that have lived here all their life, driven between jaco and san jose twice a week for 20 years, and they absolutely will not go after 8pm. No, we're not exagerating. Yes, it really is that dangerous. |

Buja, https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=8340 A few names to consider should you opt for private transportation. Interbus is a safe reasonable option as well. As others have chimed in, the drive at night is not an intelligent choice. Whatever your requirement is for being in Jaco that evening or early the following morning(fishing?) I suggest you adjust your itinerary on the arrival time if possible. |

It would be better to leave early early in the morning (say around 4am) than to go late at night. If you leave at 4am, then you'll be reaching daylight at the dangerous parts of the trip. Why not take a detour down to the gulch for a few hours, then get your travel done just as the sun is coming up? |

I have made that round trip by rent car maybe 25 times. On one return, I left too late from Quepos and hit the mts after dark (that means 6-7pm in CR). Horrible mistake, especially because as it often does up there, it got foggy. It was a l-o-o-o-n-g and s-l-o-o-o-o-w trip and very, very stupid. I remember the joy in my heart when I finally began seeeing the lights in the distance in the Central Valley on the way down. |
