Just an FYI.
It now costs $3.00 to sit down and have a smoke in the smoking area at SJO. Of course it's still free as long as you stay below the ramp.
Lighters are still restricted through security at SJO, good thing I brought some matches with me.

Hey... you get a FREE drink with that smoke. That's something or maybe not. I carry a mini Bic lighter in my pocket. It has never set off a metal detector. :) They will take the matches if they're in you carry on.

depends on where you go and who you get. Through many ports now you can carry on one lighter or book of matches. I have an all plastic cigar lighter that has never been detected...and in Colombia it fell out of my bag while being inspected and they just gave it back to me to put in my pocket. Probably safest to put lighters in your checkon bag though...and yes, carry some matches for airport smokes.

That's what I was about to say... So the bar owner wants a minimum consumption for you to use his space, what's wrong with that?

If I recall in Denver (at the airport) you have to go to the bar to smoke and the drinks are more than $3 per.....
