Seems like their philosophy is "you get what you pay for....or less". This story worked out OK in the end but it does give you something to think about. There are more links regarding Spirit at the bottom of this story. http://www.elliott.org/blog/spirit-airl ... -oriented/ |

I've got 8 flights through Spirit so far without a problem... I guess statistically I will have a problem soon, but I can accept that given the thousands I will save a year flying this airline. I don't even see the problem in the article... The front desk didn't refund her CC properly, that sucks but is common, and after contacting head office they issued the refund. I've experienced worse problems with larger, more popular, and more stable companies (large hotel chains anyone?) |

While the check-in line at Spirit annoys me greatly, I have flown Spirit to SJO twice and I arrived relatively on-time. The Beaded Clam flies Spirit for all his international business, and flew them to LGA (round trip for under $100 from FLL) and was booked to Vegas but had to cancel due to work (I went to Vegas- but on Delta). Phoenix Rising also has had good experiences with them. Like everything else in this world..YMMV. However, for SB weekend Spirit is about $100 more than AA. So I will be flying AA. ![]() |

Post subject: | SPIRIT TEASER FARES |
No doubt. Check this one out. Talks about how some airlines at FLL offered initially low teaser fares. Could it have been Spirit?? Think so, read on brothas... Air travelers wait in line at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Internantional Airport. (Sun-Sentinel/Josh Ritchie / September 21, 2007) By Scott Wyman | South Florida Sun-Sentinel November 13, 2007 Article tools E-mail Share Digg Del.icio.us Facebook Fark Google Newsvine Reddit Yahoo Print Single page view Reprints Reader feedback Text size: An effort to increase travel options at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has proved to be too successful. After seven years of offering discount fees to airlines to increase service, the airport is coping with an international terminal that is too congested. Travelers face long delays at security and immigration. Ticket counters and gates are limited at peak times. Airport administrators will ask county commissioners today to cancel the incentive program, which waived landing fees for services to new destinations. Under the program, the airport has added service throughout Latin America and the Caribbean as well as to Tallahassee, San Francisco and Denver. "It's a disaster that needs to be dealt with," County Commissioner John Rodstrom said. "We're so overloaded in Terminal 4 that we shouldn't be allowing any more service to go in there. We're going to have to start saying no." For travelers, the change could mean some airlines shy away from offering new service because the incentives give them a chance to build clientele for a route before paying full rates. On the other hand, passengers on other flights won't face long lines and a harried experience at the airport. The airport's new director, Kent George, wants to replace the incentive program with one that targets only specific destinations where the county and tourism officials see a need for direct connections. That likely would be western Europe and lower South America. International travel at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International is up 18 percent for January through September compared to last year, with August posting a 44 percent increase over the same month a year earlier. The airport has been remodeling Terminal 4 to boost its ability to handle international travel, but overcrowding remains pervasive. In August 2000, the airport began offering to waive fees that airlines pay to land their planes, use the airport's gates and have security for up to one year for any new nonstop service. The program initially was aimed at service to San Francisco, Tallahassee, Denver, London and three Latin American destinations, but later was expanded to any new nonstop service. The airport has since waived almost $3.7 million in fees, but generated another $7.9 million from the new flights. Of the 30 new flight offerings developed with the incentives, 13 have been discontinued, while nine have continued after their discounts ended. Eight still are receiving discounts. "Since FLL's international facilities are functioning beyond their intended capacity, this unrestricted approach cannot continue in its current form," George wrote in a memo to county commissioners. Most of the international growth has come from Spirit Airlines, which aggressively added service to the Caribbean and Latin America. The airline has received $1.4 million in discounts and is responsible for all eight of the routes still in the incentive program. A spokesman for Spirit declined to comment, saying the airline was unaware the county was considering dropping the incentives. Travelers, though, said they hope any change does not lead to a cutback in international offerings at the airport. "I'll go to Miami if it costs more, but I'd rather land here," said Roland Lefort, who flew into Fort Lauderdale Monday from Toronto. Evadne Brooks, who was flying home to Jamaica after visiting relatives in Broward, agreed. "It's very convenient to fly here, much closer than Miami for them to reach me," she said. Good call on that article, Jester. Saw it in today's sun sentinel and did not have the sense to think of its applicability to this ongoing Spirit debate. I don't dislike Spirit (as far as the flight itself is concerned) for SJO visits but expect things may run a little smoother on AA. |

yeah Mia2, it's a mixed bag. AA seems a lot nicer but I also left 1 hr., 35 min. late (mechanical) last Thurs. also. But the AA check in esp. with carry ons only 2 min. (yes 1,2)!!!!!!! They have even more new kiosks almost as you walk into the terminal where you can check yourself in even for Intl. flight and get a boarding pass yourself if you only have carry ons. Amazing. Plus they are finally underway again on the MIC and the streets around the airport seem to be improving. I'm thinking about working for MDC Airports then when I get off work for the week can walk straight to the my flight to my 2nd home for the weekend. |

Had one experience with Spirit early last month. As described FLL has some serious problems with their International facility but Spirt was at least part of that problem. They only had 3 agents to check in a boatload of people (and flights) at roughly the same time. Having said that I experienced no problems at all except that rather long wait to check in. It WAS a Sunday and the agent said Sunday was always the worst day. But I flew from NYC to FLL on Thursday evening, stayed 3 days in FLL, then flew FLL to SJO on Sunday and returned from SJO to NYC the following Sunday, for a grand total of $275. Not bad. Not bad at all. I would certainly give them another shot. ![]() |

I have flown spirit to SJO several times now and am booked for next week. I have never had a problem with them, but then again I dont have to check in at FLL except on the return flight. I have been checking fares for my next trip and it seems Spirit is higher than AA and having been coached by Circus I must take the cheaper flight. I would take martinair our of Orlando, but I prefer to arrive in the early afternoon and not in the middle of the night. |
