As far as the don carlos, it is probably my second favorite hotel in all of costa rica after ZB of course. not chica friendly and no unregistered guests allowed in the room. very family oriented hotel in the middle of the gulch.
that being said, I absolutely love this hotel and if you're not worring about bringing a girl home then I would say to go here. literally across the street from New fantasy and I took some nice shots of the MP from my room. Has a small bar and restaurant, free breakfast, the largest gift shop in San Jose, 3 free internet terminals, a pool waterfall, was an ex presidents home, and is currently owned by a archaeologist of pre-columbian art or his descendants and is decorated in beautiful reproductions.
