Post subject:  Nuevo Johnson Update:

My home in San Jose was Hotel Johnson and wanted to give update for those truly on a budget. That was my case with big trip coming up to SEA very soon. Contrary to thier web site the rate is still $10 or 5000 col for a single. I got in late first night and was in a marginal room but the next day they moved me to better room. The location is not for the newbie but for those used to San Jose it is not bad. Works great for me being about half way between Paseo Colon MP's and the gulch.rbc100

How far is Nuevo Johnson from La Sabana Park? Is it walking distance, and if so how safe?

I stayed there for 5 nights last trip and for just for having a place to sleep, the johnson is great, next trip I will be bringing a air mattress though. Ear plugs are good to have too.

nuevo johnson is a long walk from sabana park, doable during the day.

the hotel is next to the central market area and is safe during the day, not as safe at night.

the hotel is much closer to the gulch area and is only one block from the pedestrian walkway.

it is an inexpensive alternative. you get what you pay for.

i like it.

also, you can bring as many little darlings back to your room as you like.

the chica fee is usually 1 or 2 thousand colones.

5 little darling cluster phucks are not unheard of.

some of the rooms have 2 or 3 beds.

At that price, do they have good in room safes or lock boxes? If so, do they charge to use them?

No safe or lockboxes. But they have a safe at the desk to store passport and whatever else you like. They will inventory and give you a receipt if you want.

I enjoy spending my first night of a trip in the NJ and then part of the next day milling around the central market area before going to a major hotel. It's very interesting. Room 217 has two beds, a small mirror, and is the cleanest I've been in- but that's not saying a lot. I believe they might have some nicer rooms on the third floor, not sure. Be sure to ask not to stay with windows on the street or you'll have a problem with noise.

After reading about the Hotel Nuevo Johnson on this board, I saw it while walking around the market in Dec. so I went in and checked out the rooms. While I like the local atmosphere in the area, I could never stay in this hotel. It is just too spartan and seedy for me. In comparsion, the Morazon hotel at $40 a night is much better than this hotel at the quoted rate of $10 a night.

And the Castillo at $40 is much better than the Morazon at $40 if you are indeed considering the Morazon. I find the experience interesting but I can understand why someone would rather skip the grand experience and have a "real" hotel.

I personally enjoy the local falvor of the nieghborhood but definitely not for everyone. It is also a perfect location for me. Not too far from the Paseo Colon MP's and still not far from points in the gulch. It will be my home again next week and can't beat the price.rbc100

I would not call it seedy! But it is basic except for the big cable tvs! I actually like the window rooms! Ive gotten some good vids of the local female populace strutting thier stuff on the street below! But those guys playing dominos ALL night do get to me sometimes!!!

I know the answer is probably no, but are there phones in the room? Will be on a MAJOR budget my next trip, due to a few other trips and life obligations, and don't want to spend the bucks on a room...Also, any "good" room reccomendatoins there (floor, room number, ect)..lastly, is the chica fee for as many as you can bring in  or per chica?
