Rumor has it that JetBlue has applied for a FLL to Bogota route and a FLL to Barraquilla route. (DIRECT)

Could change somethings - si!!!!!

I would use any cheap flights to colombia to fly into Bogota and then use the colombian airline Avianca for the short hops to places like Medellin, Cali or Cartegena.

Bogota is a large city, but it is rather chilly in comparison to the above mentioned cities. Bogota would the last place on my list as far as visiting colombia for pleasure.

apparently, there are about 14 unused landing rights to Bogota not being used by the other US carriers such as american and continental.

Spirit Air is also reportedly lobbying for some of the available slots for flights out of south florida to Bogota.

for the truly die hard hard cheapskate, an 8 cent Spirit Air sale ticket to Bogota and overland bus trip from Bogota to Medellin or Cali would put a round trip to such cities out of south florida at under 150 dollars.

Bogota has hourly air and bus service to major colombian cities.

airfare is usually less or near 100 dollars each way with bus service as cheap as 25 dollars each way.

Andy is correct. The below is from the South Florida Biz Journal:

JetBlue Airways has filed for authority to fly between Fort Lauderdale and Bogota, Colombia - which, if granted, would make it the first low-cost U.S. carrier to fly that route.

Under a 2000 treaty, U.S. airlines are limited to 70 weekly flights to Colombia's main cities, which are currently allotted to American Airlines, Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

However, in it's filing with the U.S. Department of Transportation, JetBlue cites a September 2007 agreement between the two countries that opens up to 21 additional weekly flights. JetBlue applied for 14 of them - seven from Fort Lauderdale beginning in October 2008 and seven from Orlando beginning in April 2008.

JetBlue's proposed schedule lists daily round-trips to Bogota from both cities.

Currently, American Airlines - flying from Miami International Airport - is the only U.S. carrier flying to the country from South Florida. Colombian airline Avianca is the only carrier flying to Colombia from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

"Latin America is crying out for high-quality, low-fare service to the U.S.," JetBlue spokesman Sebastian White said. "We believe JetBlue is the best choice to inject competition into what is a notoriously overpriced and underserved market."

The limited flights have been the source of competition between airlines in the past.

In April, Miramar-based Spirit Airlines in April requested 14 unused American Airlines slots be reassigned to it. It wanted to fly daily between Fort Lauderdale and Colombian cities Bogota and Barranquilla.

A month later American Airlines, which holds the authority for 42 weekly flights to Colombia, announced it would add 14 flights to Colombia beginning Dec. 13. Regulators OK'd that plan, but said if the airline did not launch the flights, the permits would be automatically revoked.

in my opinion, american airlines should be stripped of the 14 extra slots and other airlines such as jetblue and spirit be allowed to compete.

my experience with american airlines service to colombia has been poor service and high fares.

competition would lower fares to colombia.

right now, out of south florida, american and avianca control most of the available flights and charge high fares with impunity.

i say F them both.

I agree. While I have yet to visit Colombia, when I do check AA fares they often seem to be substantially higher than to destinations with competition (like San Jose).

I think the same can be said for all their routes. AA SUCKS ASS... This coming from someone with just shy of 750k miles with them...
