Before some of you have fights,or violent arguements with taxi drivers, I think it's best to inform you that the basic fare for a taxi has been raised this week from 365 col. to 405 col. I believe that this increases to entire fare around 10%. This is the 4th raise in the last year. In the 4 years that I have been living here,it seems that prices have doubled. Given the huge increase in price for gasoline,and the ridiculously low prices they used to charge,I find the increase quite acceptable. A $4.00 taxi ride in SJ is probably $25 in most major U.S. cities.

Agree here too. I still always ask them in Spanish to run the meter and get a rough quote beforehand so as to keep an honest taxista honest if there is such a thing.

And hopefully, the meter isn't running at double speed which has happened to me more than once.

Curious VB. Roughly how much does it cost you to get from Escazu to the gulch these days?

I don't know for certain, but it seems to me that besides the increase in the base rate from 365 to 405, the speed of the meter has increased as well, albeit only slightly. A traditionally 800 colones ride was 950 last night.

TW... I take a lot of "private" taxis,none of which have passed on the latest increase to me. I live on the far side of Escazu (Paco) and I pay around 4000 col. to the DR. However I took a metered taxi the other day with a lot of traffic and rain,and the meter ran up to 5000 col. That seems about right,but I'll report back after I do it again under better conditions.

To Phoenix rising..... As I posted,I assume that the entire rate is increased in addition to the initial 40 col.

Bob;
if my math is correct, that would work out to about $80.00 per week (if you went to town 5 days a week).
thats 320.00 bucks a month. Hell, you could buy a 10 year old Mercedes and still have plenty left over for the Marchamo and INS.

Not counting Gas, traffic bribes, crooked mechanics etc.

I spend about $250 a month on taxis and feel it is still worth it. One less headache to deal with.
