My 2 buddies and I are planning a trip to San Jose and Jaco in January. We were planning on renting a suv and driving from San Jose to Jaco one day.
I would like to know if that's something we can do on our own (finding our way), or should we forget that and just get a cab?

Drive during the day only. It is roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes down the mountain. Not very difficult but the roads suck!!!! And the people drive like idiots passing on curves and hills etc... Hope this helps. Taxi ride is around $80.00 to Los Suenos next to jaco.....

Or...you could take Interbus for $38 round trip and not worry about it.

Excellent suggestion. Forget the rental, Interbus is only $19 per person one-way.

I agree with the above with these additions...

Driving really isn't that bad as long as you...
1 don't drink/drive,
2 drive during daylight only,
3 park in a parking garage/hotel parking area,
4 leave nothing in plain site in the car while it's parked anywhere

be sure to photo all sides of the car before you takes the keys and when you return the car. this will cut down on "damage" claims, should they happen or not.

Having a car can set you free to come and go on your on sked but, if you're only in country less than a week I'd have to agree with the other posters. Check out Drivers vetted by members of this site or try the bus.

Really, a car wreck can wreck more than just your vacation.

Or if you want to really go cheap, You can take the Transportes Jaco Bus from the Coca-cola bus terminal for c1250 (about $2.50) Leaves at 7:30, 10:30am, 1:00 3:30, and 6:30pm--returns at 5, 7:30, 11am, 3, 5, pm.
Biggest problem with this is it is a 3 hour trip instead of less than 2 hours by car.

I have taken trips all over CR this way and every trip has been interesting and have meet a lot of locals (chicas).

And PR they really are crocs not alligators

That's a Croc :!: Florida also has a species of Crocodile....in the Key Largo area. Not very many though. I stopped at the bridge out of Jaco on wednesday and sure enough, there were a bunch of them. I wonder how many are around that aren't visible. One huge "mutha" was by some brush right under the bridge. Was wishing I had a raw chicken and some string......or my ex-wife.

I'm at the Del Rey now and tomorrow I'm renting a motorcycle here in San Jose to drive to Jaco tomorrow. The guy at the motorcycle rental told me he will provide maps/directions, etc.s I have noticed that in San Jose, road signs are non-existant. On the drive to Jaco are there any signs that tell you which way you are going. I'm just a little concerned about getting lost or is it pretty much a straightforward ride?

Ice

There are a few places where you can get confused so you need to pay attention. Follow any sign to Jaco, Quepos, Manual Antonio or Los Suenos. If you do make a wrong turn it is likely that the road will deteriorate rapidly and you will know it. Also look for the tour vans - they are usually going in the direction you want to go.

Make sure to have all your life insurance premiums paid up so your beneficiaries don't have any problems with the claim. :P

Serioulsy, be careful dude, they are maniacs on those roads. I had a couple close calls last week, but I was in an SUV.
