Post subject: | Any Expert Advice On How To Upgrade Your Seat ? |
I have learned to find seating online at the lowest available fare, but I know jack squat about how to get an upgrade once I have bought a coach ticket. Anyone care to offer a primer on this? Does it cost more money or miles or what? |

The best way I found was to get on the AA frequent flyer program and earn those miles. Check out http://www.flyertalk.com for current info as things have changed since I used it. |

Gringo Malo: I've only done this with Delta Airlines. If you're holding a coach class ticket when you check in asked the clerk if there are any available upgrades. I have been able to upgrade to business or first class on a trip to San Jose for as little as $200. That was unusual most of the time it's over $200 each way. As I understand it if they have a un-field first-class tickets on your flight they will upgrade you for that bargain price. Well a bargain in their mind anyway. Lee |

If you are still on active duty, wear your uniform or something that shows you are military. Otherwise, get to the gate really early and flirt with the counter girls. I've been successful both ways, but that was a while ago. I think the airlines have gotten more anal lately about charging miles or money. Goetz |

On american airlines you can buy upgrades 30 bucks a piece and I believe it is 3 upgrade certificates from MIA to SJO an 4 LAX to SJO. or you can use 10,000 miles. If you fly over 25k in one year on continental they offer complimentary upgrades IF they are available, and the pecking order is how many miles you have vs. the other people on the first class wait list. THe american program costs more but I have almost always been able the upgrade to first class on them using the upgrade certificates whereas contintal is free to upgrade but it doesnt happen so often due to other people who may have flown 100k miles that year and overided me on the list . Also when you check in online at the counter american offers you a "special" of $100-130 depending on the route during your online checkin process. Alaska does this to but thats only domestic. |

I have upgraded at the counter in SJO on the following. US Air $200 1W (Ft Lauderdale) Martinaire $80 1W (Miami) Martinaire $400 1W (Amsterdam via Miami) Cubana $300 RT (London) Both Taca and American have always quoted me comically high prices when I asked. I believe that they simply price it out to change from your restricted ticket to a Business Class fare. |

Northwest/Continental is the best -- free automatic upgrade from ANY fare on EITHER airline, and standby upgrade a companion. If you're at least gold level, an upgrade is virtually assured. Both Surftown and Srilm are close, at 25K miles you earn elite status with Continental and are eligible for a free upgrade on a space available basis (at 50K you earn a companion upgrade too). The upgrade is on a space available basis and goes first to any class of elite member with a full Y fare ticket and then goes by elite level (platinum (75K), Gold (50K), and Silver (25K)). If a member is already ticketed and wants to request the upgrade, they can visit Manage Reservations or call their Elite Priority Line and provide their confirmation number. I believe you would still have to fly standby. And on some of these flights to/from South Florida, they pack 'em in so much I doubt you would get the upgrade. |

I have Elite Silver on Continental and they are tremendous and quite professional about giving upgrades. Sometimes they even come into coach to move me up. However, I am at a loss how upgrade on Copa. I have flown full fare and not gotten upgraded. When I inquired I got the Tico ( Panama?) shuffle. Copa says " Upgrades are given out on a priority decided by One Pass in Houston ". One Pass says " Upgrades are given out on a priority basis decided by Copa. Anyone have a clue on this? Don't forget to add (when available). My last trip, I got upgraded automatically. The trip on Friday, I probably won't get upgraded because there won't be any seats left. |
