If I pay for 1 more trip this year, I would have 40K miles flown by the end of the year giving me gold status.

As gold, you get
-100% miles bonus for each paid flight
-upgrade 48hrs before flight, not 24 like with silver

Is it worth it?

I've had gold before, If you plan on flying alot next year as well it's probably worth it as you will get more free trips because you accumulate miles faster. When I had gold a r/t from NY would earn me more than 10,000 miles.

As for the upgrade, I always had a problem with that, no matter what my status they wouldn't let me upgrade until I got to the airport, it was against the stated policy, but one of those things "muy tico".

I don't know how long ago you had it, but it looks like things may have changed. If you do online check-in, they automatically offer the upgrade (if available). If not, I believe you get an email a couple days before bumping you up. Or, at the airport.

I have a question about TACA.

They are currently running a "special" of half price to buy miles. 10,000 miles for $125.00.

How many miles does it take for a free trip from LAX? I will be returning for my 60th in January and it may make sense to buy the miles.

My trip this time on TACA was very good, 5.5 hours non-stop both ways LAX-SJO, SJO-LAX. Good departure times at both ends.

Thanks

Steve - Santas Bro
