have been to amsterdam many times but looking for a better climate and exchange rate for dollars. heard that the best place to stay for first timer in costa rica is HDR, but most hotel agencies like hotel.com won't book it. if you contact HDR site directly, you can book it, but they don't tell you how much. what gives? also: do i really need to get hep shots? and do i really need to bring condoms and lube? seems a little creepy to me. thanks

Location: Referred to the OIG by Mucho Gusto after mysterious fire at his gay night club.
Just call the HDR and book it or ask for rates in an email. They will tell you. I know I stayed in the HDR my first trip after going to Amsterdam for many a year. You will be in for the shock of your life.

No need for shots or anything like that.

Prepare to have the time of your life.

For your first trip the HDR is probably the best option.(convenient and safe)San Jose and Amsterdam are two different animals entirely and after being to both i prefer Latinas over any other type in this world of ours. The HDR has hot Latinas from many countrys and i am sure you will be able to locate several that you like.Buena Suerte

thanks for the info, guy. actually, HDR just got back to me; the 2 room suite is 270 plus tax. you think that would be preferable to the 2room suite at ZB for 250? also wondering if there are any slim girls there.... or are they all beefy?

I'm person number three now that has posted in return who used to frequent Amsterdam. No shots but the girls don't do a good job of providing lube/condoms. They (mostly) have condoms but do you want to depend on the cheapest thing the local pharmacy had that day?? Do what is suggested above for more fun.

The service from the girls is TOTALLY different. You'll like the change  There are many slim girls. My novia is 4'11" 88lbs of the tightest 24-year old body you'll ever see. And there are more like her walking the DR every night.

For your stay, it depends on two things. How long and what you want to do. If your stay is under two weeks, I'd go with hotel. For that subject I'd say the following.
1) If you want to stay in the center of town where all the free-lance action is, less liable to enjoy the comradery CRT guys provide and are willing to pay that price, DR is the place for you. Seems they do not have a personal touch to the service. It is also more difficult to find your way to NF or ZB. Bar Idem isn't too bad but still a walk. All that said with the expectation you'd like to not take a taxi everywhere during the day. At night, it's a must to/from almost any place.
2) If you want to stay a little away from the crowd, have very nice, friendly, secure and fun enviroment where you will meet a lot of great guys in addition to what is in my opinion, better on a girl-to-girl basis "friend", then Sportsmens is your best bet. If you do your research on the board and get the map in the VIP area, you'll be set from Sportsman's. Only a block or five to both NF and ZB down one road. Easier in my opinion for a newbie not to mention the ability to find a wingman in SL. DR is a more difficult five-minute daytime only walk.
3) If you want a little less expensive, La Amistad or Castillo are both good choices. Have the same good location as Sportsman without many of the nicer benefits but still good places to stay.
4) Think Presidente has some value as a nice place to stay and good and close to DR but the dress code and the amount of traffic outside the front door make it more for an experienced guy IMHO.
4) If you wanna go cheap and/or longer than two weeks, look into the cheaper hotels away from the gulch or apartments. More walking and more work finding you way around, but that too can be fun in the daytime. At night, the taxis might take advantage.

I have always stayed for long-term about 10 minute walk to the Gulch. It has been great IMHO. No problems with chicas or anything. Nice neighborhood. You also get to experience more of the local life. Had a great local soda around the corner I ate at every day for a month till it burned down one night   The very nice apartments here run you about $22 dollars a night and are as nice as most hotel hotel rooms.
I've seen the suite in the Sportsman but not in DR. Think you'd be very pleased with the Sportsman's. But if that is your price range, I'd have to recommend ZB with the 'extra benefits' and hospitality from Eddie.

If your looking for a real nice suite(much nicer than the HDR imho)the Presidente has a beautiful master suite. The Pres. is a very nice second option for a quick study novice. (very close to the HDR)My favorite hotel in San Jose!Ofcourse everyone has different tastes.

I have only been once, I stayed at the Amon first it was okay, Nixon made things easy the suite wasn't that bad dated a bit and the closest thing I saw to an American style hotel. I ended at the SL in the Presidents Suite about 800 sq ft not fancy but kinda cool, I really liked it lots of room to lounge. Everyone from staff to guests was very cool and friendly. The suite was 250 but I took a tour of the other rooms and all in the newer section were nice for decent prices.

Thats all I can say from experience. Oh it's also close to zb and just about everywhere else. Have fun.

As for the hepatitis shots......do you need them??.......who knows?? :? I got mine several years ago before my first trip to Costa Rica. In hindsight, I prabably wouldn't do it again, though it was no big deal. I think I paid about $350 for these shots [no insurance coverage for this]. I got two injections for hepatitis A....each injection one year apart. I got three injections for hepatitis B; the first two, one month apart, and the third injection five months later.

I believe that I may have mentioned this previously, but timeshare owners can trade into San Jose. The property is in La Uruca, outside San Jose between downtown and the airport, and is very nice. The taxi ride to downtown--I did it two or three times per day--was reasonable. Also, public transportation exists.

Yes, the place is chica-friendly. Just be discreet, of course. The guard keeps the girl's ID while she is in your villa, and calls the taxi for her return.

It was cheaper for me to trade my timeshare than stay in the hotel, and I have the whole, three-bedroom, villa.
